Piano Melody

Featured Replies

Just a short, simple melody. I'm going to try to incorporate this into the Symphony I'm working on. Crits would be awesome, thanks.

I am not sure what you are trying to do with this. It sounds pretty melancholic, but I can't really see how this is a melody you are working on. These are just some chords which put after eachother create this texture, but to call it a melody for that I am not sure you would.

The first chord you started with a pretty open sound, and a pretty dull sound as well. By this I do not mean that it is bad, it just sounds that way and can be very effectively used when followed by more interesting sounds (or preceded as well). It could be a nice way of creating the athmosphere you are looking for. So my comment on that would be not to repeat it. That first chord BEGS for change, and you dont provide for it. You could tie those repeating chords to one (one half note instead of two quarter notes). Or change the chord, or leave the same chord but add some other tones, or change its position. Actually, what chords are you using in that first bar?

I don't like the fourth octave in the left hand of the first bar. I could see how the right hand Eb octave could work, but not when you combine it with another Eb octave in the left hand (especially when one of the notes of both octaves is the same). I know this is not for piano but the sound would not be very nice nontheless.

These two things are the ones causing the first bar to sound dull and open and noninteresting to me.

Also, there are quite some parallel octaves all over the place which make it sound open and dull (again, dull as a classification of the sound, not as a way of valuing these chords for their appropriateness, although it does leave some room for improvent in my opinion).

Judging from this piece alone makes me think that you are quite new to composing, am I right? Might I suggest you don't start working on that symphony of yours untill you at least have some more experience in writing down what you want in a more... satisfying way?

Keep experimenting though, it's a great way to learn!

Thanks for sharing and welcome to this site. There are a lot of experienced composers here (me not included) from whom you can learn a great deal.

Wow, thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it. And yeah, I'm a complete newb. :P

Try adding some variety and accidentals. That would make it interesting. Change the key. Also, it seems like some of you time changes are actually unnecessary and could be kept in 4/4. Especially towards the end. Always make your music as easy to read as possible and the musicians will love you forever. That's it for now. Good luck!
