invention 2 for quartet

Featured Replies

this is a sad (or "blue") sounding invention for quartet or trio. the starting theme is simple and calm but later It has very contrasting dramatic rythmical variations. The structure is A A2 A3 A4. (i have made octave changes in the score to fit the notes inside the sheet)

invention 2 for quartet

I dont think I have ever heard something like this... quite original

You have not specified any instruments? The ending was a bit unexpected (sounds like the dominant (V) of the piece), but not totally out of place.

It seems to me though that you were not very consequent with your accidentals. Like m4 where you use Bb and A#, and C# and Db at the same time, or m6 where you use C# and Db at the same time (etc), while I would think it is all in the same key... I would say some key of Bb (I think you made up the key yourself? Or did you use a MIDIfile which your software screwed up accurately visualising?).

The piece has a nice flow and sounds like a mixture of western and more (middle)eastern influences. Not very sad though!

i haven't specified instruments. harp/guitar, piano/2nd guitar and flute soloist could be a good trio group for this piece since there is long legato notes in soloist line and harp/piano/guitar background playing long notes sharply but slowly dampening notes makes good effect on the background and contrast to the soloist player.

i have one problem near the ending of the piece. in the last bars i have took every other bar from the theme. that makes it sound like the music is little rushing. it seems that the high piano in measures 44 and 45 should be in lower octave, otherwise piano jumps 2 octaves higher and make the music sound like jumping 2 bars over.

when i made the sheet i wasn't sure about the key because of the extra accidentals and i just made it in C major and the midi sequencer wrote accidentals. i checked from scale finder and it showed it would be close to so called 8 tone spanish Bb scale (h W h h h W W W = Bb, B, Db, D, Eb, E, Gb, Ab, Bb) but i have also wroted some B and C notes also in some parts of the piece

The piece ends in F major chord. i could simply write after that an ending cadenca chord in Bb with soloist playing rapid notes in the Bb scale to make it end to Bb.

i haven't found a way to update the score and music file in the interface. I made new pdf where the piece has 5 Flats or it is in Bb minor and write that ending part m44 and m45 again.

to reupload the media you have to go to the music page (http://www.youngcomposers.com/profile/music/semotivo/composition?entry=68692), and in the square where there is also the title, instrumentation, genre (etc etc) specified, you will find in the right lower corner a white rectangle symbol depicting a blank page. Click that symbol to change anything from your upload, from name and genre to the actual media itself.

ARGHH! I wanted a perfect authentic cadence at the end!

Anyways, why B-flat minor? It's not a terribly friendly key, especially when you're NOT specifying instruments. Flute can read in the key, but it's annoying. But then you go entirely too low for a flute to play. It can usually only go to 'middle C'. Recorder is the same. It might work for clarinet, but that's a lot of notes. Also too low for violin, though viola could work (but wrong clef for easy reading, and again, terribly nasty key of B-flat minor). And this is just the top stave.

While you have an interesting sounding composition here, I think you could benefit from learning a bit about orchestration. This way you can write for specific instruments and have hopes that one day you piece can be played by live people rather than just a computer. That is... unless of course your long term goal is to write computer music.

yes that is true the flute goes very low. Maybe its better to play with bass flute.

if i transpose it for normal flute the piece doesn't work and it loses the feeling.

the key is annoying for flute, it may be transposed to Am, G#m, Gm,F#m etc.
