Schizophrenia For Solo Violin

Featured Replies

A piece for solo violin written for my senior recital. The piece is intended to convey aspects of schizophrenia (at least to an outsider), and was written to be fairly challenging. The recording is from the performance at my recital.

I uploaded a WIP of this piece a while back and it's been buried in the archives, so here it is in its final form!

Enjoy!

EDIT: I threw this in here since we don't really have a solo instruments sub-forum, (other than piano), so mods feel free to move it if you'd like.

Nice recording! The piece is wonderful. I like the great variety of textures and timbres used throughout and the good use of different registers on the instrument. I can see how the music relates to the title, yet the piece feels quite coherent. How did you generate the pitch content? Was there a system or was it done intuitively? I really enjoyed listening to the piece.

I can't say much that's bad about the music itself, save for some range considerations - feel free, when writing for violin, to go up to high G (sixth position) - that guarantees "safety", while you could potentially write up to two octaves above the e string with no problems if done right. I think the contrasts could be much more effective with one or two very high passages. There is also a chord at m. 21 which is of extreme awkwardness... the only way to avoid the fingering is to break the chord up into two fifths, since the only possible fingering is one finger (1st here) across all four chords... guitarists would be happy, but fifths are very awkward for violins when there are three or four simultaneous ones...

I probably should have asked if you play the violin - if that was intentional, there's no problem :santa: .
