Moments in the Music Building

Hey guys,

I wrote a pretty unconventional piece this year. I wanted to write something spatial, something that you had to move through. It would be site specific to my school's music building.

The overarching idea was that this piece would make all the performers see the music building in a new light. I wanted them to feel like there were musical opportunities everywhere in this building.

And with that, I present to you...

Moments in the Music Building

The piece is separated into 4 youtube videos. The whole thing is 47 minutes so if you're too busy, just watch out a bit.

Here's the breakdown: There are 4 main events with little interludes in between them.

I think this concept as a musical composition = complete fail. It just... doesn't fit the bill as a "piece of music." As a set of games however, BRILLIANT! I loved all these ideas and I want to play them all now. Every single one of them! :w00t:

I have a fellowship at my music building that announces "John Cage" at any and all sudden/awkward silences. Highly effective.

*will probably walk around all day tomorrow going "bum... bum... bum.... bummm... " *

Fair enough. They do have more in common with games than they do with music. I don't think that precludes them from being a composition, however since in each example, we're creating and performing music.

Glad you liked the games! I've thought of adapting them so that other people could play them in different places. First and last events, Drum Circle Music Hallway and Musical Manhunt could definitely done anywhere cuz all you need is a hallway, some people, and the outdoors. The middle two are trickier to recreate cuz not every building as a hallway of practice rooms or a lounge with glass windows encircling it.

That John Cage joke sounds awesome. I'm definitely trying with my music friends.
