Spitting Images

This is the second movement of my twenty-five movement magnum opus, Spitting Images for solo flute. The flautist was fed a generous portion of Mexican food before the premiere, which was hailed by Alex Ross of the New York Times as "an unforgettable blow [to the senses]."

LOL! Is ... this an April Fools thingie?

And yet this is really a lot of fun, in all honesty. When I read "Like A Ewe In Heat", I nearly fainted. I think an audience would be in stitches if this were performed.

Thanks for sharing

This is amazing. If you wrote more movements I would absolutely play them. Oh god, please write more!

"exercise caution in discovering what an ewe in heat sounds like"

LOL!

Well worthy of a 69th opus.

i find it very beautiful. if people would write more music without requirements for pretty, exact and perfect, world would me much more fun/true to me. and i'm not joking, it's not funny to me. it's simply beautiful.

Well I'm glad one person saw this and appreciated it on April Fool's proper! Yeah, my post as a whole was meant as a joke. The piece was actually performed in concert with some other flute miniatures and taken very seriously (though my friend and I had a good chuckle over the surprised faces of other listeners). The music is serious even if the text isn't.

I appreciate that, pliorius. The piece is playable on the exact pitches I wrote (even if it is hard to hit the notes and hold them), but I told the performer not to worry about it and enjoy what came out. I appreciated the performer's interpretation far more than if she had been overly concerned with hitting the written pitches. I thought it was beautiful as well.

Thanks! I will definitely write more flute miniatures. Maybe that can be one of my summer projects.

Hey John, I'm glad you caught some of the subtler aspects of the post!

I figured it was an April fool's sort of thing, but - there's so little truly amusing flute music, and this is done very well. If it's all right I'd love to stick this in a recital or two (and perhaps play it at a couple of music festivals?). I'm eagerly awaiting any new flute miniatures you write :D

Very laugh-worthy indeed

It sounds odd - could this be heralding a new era in flautist-ism?
