April 13, 201114 yr I'm going to record a piano improvisation, and for fun, I want to base it on ideas provided by blog readers, tweeters, and my favourite: YCers! I'll pick the best ideas and record the improv. Then I'll post a video of it on Youtube, with the relevant suggestions appended to the video. Please start suggesting! As soon as I have enough, I will record it. Suggest anything you want...... "play a section in Eb".... "sad theme in the middle"...."play like you've just had 5 cups of espresso"...."wrong notes!"... the list goes on! Please leave your suggestions below, or find me on Twitter @danielbarkley
April 13, 201114 yr Ugh I hate comments that make me log in to things. Cecil Taylor crossed with daisies and roto-organ style playing.
April 13, 201114 yr l would like to see you improvise something utilizing two (or three) different layers: 1. A tonal progression - your choice 2. A serial textural layer - taking the various components of a row and devising a texture out of them 3. A pentatonic melody overlayed, and supported, by the previous two layers. GO!
April 13, 201114 yr Author I knew I could rely on you guys for some crazy ideas ;) Hm, it makes you log in to comment? Didn't know that - bit of a pain, agreed! EDIT: I changed the settings, so you no longer have to log in! Comment away, folks! Thanks!
April 13, 201114 yr Start and end the improvisation with a variation on the theme of Bach's musical Offering. Use a stretto. If you want to use the fifth progression, use a more or less chromatic theme along it.
April 13, 201114 yr Author Gah, I would, but one of my 2011 resolutions is no improvisations involving variations on Bach's Musical Offering. Damn! Super-cluster, however, is on the cards :P
April 14, 201114 yr Play a section that deliberately sounds like you're playing wrong notes. :phones: tongue-in-cheek like!
April 14, 201114 yr A waltz. But instead, the accompaniment is just a bunch of random notes, starting with a low one and then two higher ones. Then some stupid melody over it, right near the end of the piece. There you go!
April 14, 201114 yr Author Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I was able to use some of the more sensible ones, and your comments appear in the video! Hope you enjoy.... just a bit of fun!
April 15, 201114 yr Hey nice impro... looks like my idea was too radical compared to the others, or maybe you had "space" in the other and mine was too specific, because that clustersote sounds kinda out of place, your ending was landing very nice and suddenly my recommendation  hey with this I recalled I recorded and impro once... I just posted here: http://www.youngcomposers.com/profile/music/SYS65/composition?entry=75406 Next time I record one with video :whistling:
April 15, 201114 yr Author Hey Daniel, I thought it was a good idea, but I decided to include it at the end in a humorous "surprise" manner, rather than do a full section based on it (which would be fun too).
April 15, 201114 yr Love it! And you love pedal tones, but that's totally cool :P I don't know about that gamelan section, but cosmic cowboy was pretty epic.
April 16, 201114 yr I think the Heckel-waltz was the best part :musicwhistle: you may write it before you forget it
April 16, 201114 yr I love this!!!! So funny. My part is great, thanks for doing it perfectly! Heckel And, I forgot to ask: Did you just come up with it then as you sat down? And don't forget to write it down!
April 17, 201114 yr Daniel, why is the score for "Sofia's Scherzo" not provided? I really want to play it. You should know that my middle name happens to be Sofia.
April 17, 201114 yr Author Good point, I must have accidentally taken it off the website. If you're feeling generous, you can buy it here for $1 :P http://www.sibeliusmusic.com/index.php?sm=home.score&scoreID=164454 But it's actually already on YC! I don't think it's the latest version but it is there. http://forum.youngcomposers.com/t21873/sofias-scherzo/
