Waking from a Coma

Featured Replies

Something I threw together very recently; it's the first time I've really played with harmonizing. It's intended to be a rather uplifting track.

Waking from a Coma

As I have no formal musical training, I'd really appreciate any feedback or pointers I can get!

Hmm -- I don't really see this as being Pop/Rock at all, actually. More like an incidental theme in a video game :hmmm:

When wanting advice on harmony and such, it makes things a lot easier when one can see a score of the sheet music being played. You can likely do this too, if you download "PDf Creator" (A Google search will easily let you find it), and then just "Print" your virtual page of your music software onto the computer itself with it -- it's not hard :)

As for the music itself -- I like the atmosphere being presented. It's kind of chill, and upbeat, with just very mild undertones of anxiety -- I can see why it's named "Waking From A Coma", as this seems sort of like the reaction of an emotionally-drained family being relieved at their loved one's arousal from the coma. Something to that effect, I'm not sure if that's precisely what you were intending here. Maybe you were going for something more abstract -- the feelings of the person waking up? But the first suggestion is my first choice as to what you're going for.

Musically, there's nothing that really sounds jarring or out of place in the piece, like any misplaced "half-tone friction", so to speak. But it does sound a little bit "empty" sometimes -- like there's an over-reliance on open 5ths, or maybe a sort of pentatonic scale. This actually isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I don't think it's entirely intentional, so maybe someone can give you some pointers on that if you were to upload a score?

On the whole, though, this is actually very nice work -- it has a genuine atmosphere to it that really drew me in, and the fact this piece music has clear structure and form despite its use of variation is a real plus and shows you have a knack for making music and organizing the ideas so the listener doesn't get lost (which is very rarely a good thing). Definitely keep at it

I enjoyed listening! Thanks for sharing
