Nocturne for piano

Featured Replies

I wrote this nocturne a few weeks back for a performance at a local conference, my friend played this but sadly it was not recorded.

However, I have here the Finale file and midi for those of you who are interested. It's an introspective, short piece with a definate moodiness about it.

Nice piece, very picturesque. I wasn't entirely convinced by the interchange between standard quavers and triplets though, it didn't quite sound subtle enough in places, but I dare say that with a bit of rubato injected into a live performance, that wouldn't be a problem. I also found the ending a bit dissatisfying because the last descent consists only of open 5ths and octaves whereas the rest of the piece is harmonically rich, but if you wanted to go for a barren effect, it works well.

If you do ever get this piece recorded, don't forget to post it.

Yes, I definately think some rubato will help there. As far as that last chord, I think what I might do is tie over the chord from the previous bar (to be held with the pedal) so there is the final "A", but also that quartal chord from the last measure is still lingering slightly above it. Should make it sound less empty!

Thanks!

This is actually some really inspirational stuff. Not the most cohesive piece but I really love these chord progressions. I'm going to use them in a piece possibly. Don't worry I won't rip you off

Isn't Rubato a lovely thing!

Good stuff.

I thought it was quite beautiful in most places. I found it very cohesive myself, mostly because the harmonic palette is consistent and defined. The length of the piece is perfect. Any longer and I'd expect you to break out from that palette. It
