Music of the 20th, 21st century

Featured Replies

Greetings fellow composers!

Each year since 2001, ABC Classic fm (Australia's leading classical, jazz and world music station) have hosted a classical music countdown of the top 100 pieces of music voted by the listeners. Each time the 'Classic 100' is on there is a different genre that the listeners have to vote music for e.g. For the Classic 100 chamber music you would have to vote for your favourite piece of chamber music. This year the theme is music written in the 20th and 21st century.

I am pretty sure on what music I might vote for (Michael Nyman's MGV or Hugues Dufourt's l'Asie d'après Tiepolo) but I am quite curious as to what other people's favourite contemporary pieces are which might make me discover some new music that I might like better.

Hmmmm....

The Rite of Spring is too obvious, so no.

MY MUSIC! :P (nah, kidding!)

How about Louis Andriessen's "Symphony for open strings"? It's a really interesting piece. Not sure how big a hit it would be, but I like it :P

Prokofiev's Skythian (spelling?) suite should be mentioned too.

That's true! I love that piece :)

I'm not sure if Tchaikovsky was composing after 1900 as he seemed to be quite dead (therefore, to bring out that bad joke, decomposing ... )

My favorites of the chamber music repetoire ever, really.

I forgot about that! That's one of my favorite pieces ever!

And we can't forget Stravinsky's Symphony for winds ;)

I'm don't feel Tchaik 5 like I do 4. The Fifth just seems like a sleeper to me! (And I am a real Tchaik lover!)

Ah yes, Penderecki and his good ol' Threnody for the victims of Hiroshima. A fantastic piece.

In the category of Japanese traumas I prefer Schnitkes Nagasaki Oratorio

:horrified: I love the 5th symphony!

Pierre Henry's Danse Machine (it's in 4 parts listen to the whole thing!!)

Thank god for Wellsz Channel!

This is like what Nancarrow meets with Varese and Sly & The Family Stone - those crazy French.

Doctor Atomic: John Adams. Hands Down one of the BEST operas of the 21st century thus.

Also in that same category: Ricky Ian Gordan's The Grapes of Wrath.

Doctor Atomic: John Adams.

I NEVER would have guessed that! :P

Also, Trouble in Tahiti by Leonard B.

Halil by him too.

Never heard it. Heard of it, but not listened to it!

I don't mind how old you are. But telling your heard something 1 year ago or 14, is quite a difference. So I wanted to make that explicit, I wanted that clarified. c'est tout... :)
