Personally, I make money by using proper grammar and spelling in my correspondence with publishers and clients.

Typically money comes from commissions these days. I know that is the case with my music. Its not until your music becomes in demand by performers will you actually make money through publishing, self publishing or through a publisher.

You can also put on a recital and charge at the door, but you will just find yourself breaking even or owing someone money so that not the smartest way.

Composing isnt a good way to make money at first, you most likely will have to find other ways to make money while still composing and building up your portfolio and visibility on the side. A lot of composers go into teaching so that they can still compose and make a living.

I haven't got any money out of commissions. The only money I ever get for my music is in composition competitions.
