icymx
I write music to express emotion, and to show my inner creativity. I am in flow when I am composing, and when listening to my pieces it is a wonderful feeling. I primarily compose music for computer games, an run a composition thread on the Game Maker Community (link: http://bit.ly/MusicRequests ). I do it because it is what I love doing. Tokkemon
I compose, now, because if I don't... I lose my scholarship... I say that because I am not writing the kind of music I want to write right now. But, in general, I compose because it's something to where my body and mind push me. Like, when I was 13, and I was sitting at home, I had no desire to go outside and play. My desires lay at my piano where I would noodle around and write down the things I played because I liked their sounds. Soon enough, I realized I was in college for it. hahaha. What do you know?! What are you doing now and what do you want to do?

Ink
I have no idea where the "drive" comes from. I mean, it literally started about three days after I learned how to read music. So I suppose the main perk (since I don't know the reason) is...to get chicks
Morivou
What are you doing now and what do you want to do? I'm writing a lot of chamber music, and I want to be writing more vocal music. They aren't letting you write what you want? Correct.
Morivou
Any decent school is going to tell you to write music you wouldn't otherwise write. It's a learning experience. Right, what Dom said. :)

I think you misunderstand...your teacher can tell you to write for orchestra, but they can't dictate your exact style. Your style is personal. If they told you "write a symphony like mozart", well, you'd learn that in a styles class. Oh, I'm also at a "decent" school, so I know from experience. gigeorge17371
I know... we're talking about composition. How observant, well done.
Gabe Huff
I can't say exactly why I write music. In general, I'm a creative person. I could be sketching, painting, sculpting, or writing novels. But it just so happened that the events in my life have so far led me into music. And I'm quite enjoying it!
calle
Being an amateur, I don't need a reason, as for everything one does for pleasure; the reason is in the pleasure itself. Also, I wish to understand the music from the Masters. Maybe trying to write, in addition to listen and read, could someday disclose me more of the inner engine of their compositions.
ROCKYIII
I've been given a gift from God. I use it for his Glory. Hahaha, at least you're not cocky ;)
wayne-scales
I've been given a gift from God. I use it for his Glory. Well, look who's the favourite! All I got from God was a €20 Amazon gift voucher. Jesus came through and got me a really good quality robe, though; I intend to use it for his glory. But that deadbeat Holy Spirit guy just got me a cheap card: he said that the gift voucher and robe was from all of them.

Austenite
You were the Chosen One!!!! “For many are invited, but few are chosen.” (Mt. 22:14) Should I say "congrats", then...
treehugger1995
So how does the selection process work: is it sort of a lottery type thing? they pick names out of a hat but seriously, I see nothing wrong in using music for religion. I mean, it's not unheard of. and if someone believes they have a gift from God, well, it's their belief, and shouldn't be argued. Personally, I think everything's a gift and we should make the most of it.
Austenite
There are circumstances that we're not able to understand. And there is also man's evil and/or stupid actions, for which we can't honestly blame God.

dscid
Having felt deeper pain can lead to a deeper sense of self, and having experienced it can easily change your behavior for the 'better' (or worse). Is that not a gift? :P
wayne-scales
Make a new thread if you want to celebrate Jesus giving people cancer for their birthdays and letting sex-offenders ring in the new year with some casual rape, and/or bring up poignantly stupid theodicies; this is a whole different compilation of guaranteed boredom. dscid
Hardly...many composers have expressed their exceptional suffering in their art, and this goes for other art forms. The art that was created by this catalyst has often been what holds their names through time. So, to not celebrate their life would mean to not celebrate their art. And it should go without saying that this is relevant to the topic. The attempt to heal yourself through your art, is reason enough 'to compose'. However, many artists who have undergone this, ended up killing themselves, so they were unable to heal through their attempts. Speaking to someone who will listen is enough to help someone get over something, so expressing it in another form, would hopefully be a viable option...Though, I think it's interesting how many artists aren't recognized in their time...when they needed someone to listen.
dscid
Or, it's right in front of your eyes, but you're unable to accept it...whatever your expectations of your life are, you shouldn't blame god for the outcome...regardless of whether or not you suffered. It falls back on you...Destiny, or not... As I said earlier. Is it not obvious that many people who haven't faced many challenges, are too comfortable and complacent with themselves. I've met many people who have had 'easier' lives, who are shallow, and I've met many people who overcome great difficulty, and are generally much more pleasant to be around, and it's quite easy to sense they have more substance. This substance, is the gift I speak of, which can be directly expressed in many forms. On the other hand, there are the people who can't accept their past (leading up to their present, which directly affects their future), and are not pleasant to be around...at all...yet, I'm sure their art could have potential. dscid
I only said what was relevant. Elementary ideas are the foundations for greater things. But, of course, you already know that! :eyebrow:
