Any advice on writing a piece for 4 Flutes?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone share any tips with me for writing a piece for four concert flutes? I know the flute well as an instrument but I am not good at writing for lots (yet).

A set like this (string quartet, wind quartet, ...) should:

1. Keep the voices independent (avoid crossing).

2. Make Counterpoint.

These 2 are basically the same lol.

I don't think so.

You can make counterpoint crossing voices many times. It can be done, but if you don't master it, the result can be messy.

All I can say is:
1. make each part interesting
2. Avoid having unison passages if at all possible.
3. Just write something and we'll give you feedback.
