When you give a teenage girl Napster and tell her to burn you a CD of her favorite songs and call it the soundtrack to your video game

  • Another favorite, from PC land: Civilation 4's "Baba Yetu."

  • My favourite soundtrack is from vagrant story.   But I like so much game music that listing it would take forever, lol.

Ah, well that makes sense. A titan as far as I'm concerned in the genre. When will we all realize that Peter is just right when it comes to video game soundtracks. I just started my first plunge into

Also, new Crash Bandicoot soundtrack is lit.

I actually might have to get a hold of this game. Crash Bandicoot was the platformer for men of culture, while plebs played Mario and Sonic

Another track I found through a Super Mario World rom hack.  This one is from Front Mission - Manifold Irons:

This soundtrack went hard

That classic JV-1080 flute

Street Fighter 6 soundtrack is also sounding promising

Well let's start off by saying this song is like crack for the ears:

Ok now with that out of the way, here's the ones that have left the greatest impression on me over the years:

1. Empire Earth Title Track: certainly the most epic music I've ever heard in its genre. Pardon the apparent low bitrate of this particular recording of it:

2. Megaman X, X2, X3 soundtracks. Though for the SNES, these tunes rocked, and were done so well you could easily imagine their sound as legit rock tunes. Megaman isn't aka Rockman for nothing, after all. However, now we have this awesome guy so we can no longer leave anything to the imagination:

And while we're here with this guy, lets go to #3 as well, since he did a bunch of metal covers for Chrono Trigger as well. The game's music is hands-down the best complete work of video game music I've heard, with Frog's Theme being my favorite track:

4. last, and probably also least, I nevertheless very much like the title and hobbiton themes from the Lord of the Rings Vol 1 for SNES, even though the game itself wasn't exactly spectacular:

Most of the soundtrack is pretty lame on its own, but the Crisanta Phase II theme from Blasphemous is easily the best track on the soundtrack.

  • 1 month later...

Masterfully-spooky composition

It hardly gets any more '80s

This track from Chrono Cross - Time's Grasslands revists some familiar themes from Chrono Trigger in a sort of acoustic cover/mashup:

This track was used in a Super Mario World rom hack although it's not technically from any particular game, I thought it was pretty cool:  (Drax - Sun and Rain)

This is a cool track from Secret of Mana - Distant Thunder for the SNES.  This guy made a good quality live cover version of it that I thought was pretty cool:

This track from Metropolis Street Racer - Menu is really dope ... in a kind of trance-like, EDM kind of way:

Here's a cool track from Groundseed - Hometown that I found in a Super Mario World rom hack:

This track from Unreal Tournament '99 - Foregone Destruction has a really cool vibe:

This track from Bee Hunter - the loneliness (not sure if that's a game or not) is pretty tight:

The only story-line that I think is even more sublime is Chrono Trigger as far RPG's go.  I don't know if you've ever heard the music from that game but Nabuo Uematsu helped write it as well.

Ah, well that makes sense. A titan as far as I'm concerned in the genre. When will we all realize that Peter is just right when it comes to video game soundtracks. I just started my first plunge into the game, but instantly I'm met with interesting music and genius composition. I'll hopefully continue to update this thread and share whatever I hear as I dive deeper into the game.

Back in the day, I played World of Warcraft (cringe, I know) with my roommate at the time, and a particular area featured an instrument known as the Nyckelharpa. Basically a keyed violin of sorts. Very cool.

These two do a great job:

This next track is called "Vardavar" by Tigran Hamasyan.  It's not technically video game music but it was used in a Super Mario World rom hack so I'll post it here.  It's very rich in outlandish rhythms:

This track is also from Alcahest (although I've never played it - I heard this in a Super Mario World rom hack) - it's from the music for the Imperial Palace:

This track is awesome too.  It's from Alcahest - The Demon Underworld:
