Supernova

Featured Replies

It's an overture...I consider it my Opus 2, meaning that is my first finished orchestral work. It's about the phenomena called "supernova" of which a team of explorers are interested and prepared to adventure themselves in the mystery of deep space (a possible way to interpret it :( )!

I hope you'll listen to it... I finished it in the middle of the September 2006, and re-orchestrated at the beginning of May 2007 (the new mp3 in October 2007) . :)

I have uploaded the re-orchestrated mus. file! (the score is for a smaller orchestra than the mp3 is... For example, in the score I do not use the Bass Drum)

OK, pretty solid beginning, catchy, pleasant music, would work well as film music for the kind of scene you want to portray. Those flute and piccolo embelishments you add are pretty cool. Around 1:45 you slightly change the mood, and it works. The original mood is pretyt much retaken after that, but it gets kinda messier, this could use some polishing up. The snare at 3:00 is very nice, and so is the forte with the gong after that. I'm wasn't too sure about the repeat around 3:55 but you did it well. The passage after the end of the phrase is beautiful, great calm, soothing music. Reminds me of the stars. The way the horns are used is also quite filmy. Then you go back to heroic at 6:40, great. And 6:55 is even better. I was hoping for some more variation at 7:40, but it works. Once again the flute/piccolo effects at 8:05. Oh, cool forte ten seconds later. 8:30 could have been even more powerful with percussion, like stronger drum rolls. 9:32 is perfect for a movie soundtrack, and right after that moment you re-enter with the already familiar phrase. I wish you could develop that phrase a bit more instead of just repeating it, it would be a vast improvement. There we have a heroic crescendo-diminuendo around 11:20-ish. Oh, 12:16 we return to the big crescendo. We go back to calmer music with the characteristic flute ornaments and their melody at 13:28 is beautiful. However, I felt the ending could have been better, like with a larger crescendo up to fortissimo and then going back to piano, ending the way you did.

Overall, very movie-like, colorful, I think it describes a space journey well, but I wanted it to go a little beyond rondo form. Beautifully orchestrated, try spicing it up more variating the themes, exploring them. Good job.

I have no idea how to review this, however I would just like to say:

1) I enjoyed this music alot. It's certainly "filmy", and reminds me of another film composer I can't put my finger on..

2) You've done a great job of articulating the breadth grandeur and wonder of space.

3) You have good talent in orchestration

4) I'm going to listen again :sadtears:

Thank you for sharing.

Thanks a lot!!!

I spoked with my teachers of my school and they said that learning compositon without a teacher is almost impossible...but I think that dedication and love for this art is a good beggining :sadtears: !!!

Thanks for the comment!!! I appreciate that! :(

very lyrical and melodious. Your countermelodies are sublime specially in the interchange between the flute and the harp parts

As the depicting of the explotions in the stars you created through the changing of chord patterns was revealed, I noticed that the transition from one chord to another was absolute. Meaning, there were barely few comun tones between chords leading then to the use of parallel 5 that to my taste if avoided would create a new window full surprises such as dissonances and transitional chords.

The introduction and repetition of the oboe solo was of great approval , specially in the second movent with its light textures.

I was specting more of a 'witchy' like melody with the entrance of your xylophone solo :P but knowing the title of the piece I guess it was alright.

Your style in this piece is of a holts ' the planets ' sort.

Generally speaking , I like your style more than his :)

because of your

* -Nice orquestration

* -Nice counter melodies

+ -use comon tones, no paralle 5ths

+ -find better ways to transition from one chord to another. ( suspensions, passing tones, etc)

thanks for sharing

greetings.

Can you render to .mp3, or maybe .mid? My Finale Notepad is buggy, so I try to avoid using it as much as possible.

I'll be brief here - my internet connection is going pathetically slow this morning so I can't download the scores - well, I can but they look like they're going to take all day.

It's a nice work, flowing and well proportioned. The scoring seems well balanced though might do with a bit of weeding out here and there (but that's just me, sorry). Very nice build up around 3'15" and the way it recedes into the Cor Angl solo. You're chancing it a bit with the horn solo around 5'43".

Good stuff.

wow, you have a great musical know. the structure impressed me mostly.

you definately know what you're doing and if this is what you love, you will definately have a future with post production in film.

Well, I listened to the second part only. I have to say that while your orchestration is fine, and your sense of movement and overall musicality is very good, I did not get an "outer space" vibe. Rather, it was very earthly. Perhaps, this could be a sound track for an expansive mountain landscape, or perhaps an underwater voyage, but definitely not outer space. Your harmonies and rhythms are much too triadic, standard, and predicatable. The snare parts could have been transcribed directly from a Civil War reenactement drum core. Granted, Your flute melismas are Star Warsy, but, that was about it as far as I could imagine in terms of its relating a feeling of the vast reaches of space. As is typical with a lot of talented "young" composers, your harmonic language is sophisticated only within the confines of a mostly triadic palette. This, in my opinion, is where you need to expand your horizons.

Am I right in understanding that you are self taught? If this is true, then you have your work cut out for you. I recommend that you explore modal possibilities - both standard modes that we all know and love, but also the modes of the harmonic minor scale -this and other harmonic devices, such as pandiatonic writing, whole tone scales, and experimentation with polychords will provide you with a larger arsenal of tools to paint the pictures your are attempting.

-Good luck with your work

Wow, long piece I see. Good work! Definitely sounds like film music, I would love to see you music being posted on "THAT" particular movie if they make it! I like how your chord strucutures are, but I didn't get a feeling that you know where you want to go with it. If you know what I mean. Thanks for sharing, and keep up the good work. Btw, I loved your Title and the plots. Exciting. :)

First off, what a delicious treat you have for us! I will definitely be snagging the mp3 of this and adding it to my list of favorites. I may even stick it on my IPOD. :-)

That said, your piece seems to be dominated by two distinct moods. You have grandeur ala Star Trek in some places (with the horn melody set against the shimmering strings), and then you have a Lawrence of Arabia style melody in the oboe and other woodwinds that occupies much of the rest of the work. There are varying degrees between these two moods, but otherwise, that is what you have for us.

I do not necessarily feel as if I am drawn to space much of the time. But that could also imply that we are not always focussed upon the stars beyond the spaceship, but on the interactions between individuals, individuals who may hail from many different nationalities. The Arabian twist to one of those themes especially implies this.

Somebody mentioned the chords that share no tones (and chided you on your parallel fifths). However, it is that very crime which gives me the impression of Star Trek (something they used from time to time, especially in movie VI). I can see where you might want to avoid some of them, but I think you should leave some of them in, at the very least the ones in the major chromatic third shifts. There, the parallel fifths give you the empty sound you need to imply the vast emptiness and limitless grandeur of space!

Overall, I'm floored. If you keep at it, you will make it as a film composer. Bravo! Bravo! :P

When I was assured that this is true I was in the 9th heaven!!!!!!! I presented my compositions to the director of the school and he was the one that chose "Supernova" from all my orchestral works, and by doing that I knew that I had to re-orchestrate the entire work!

And this is what I did... I rearranged the entire instrumentation by adding more woodwinds and brass and cutting from the "chaotic strings formula" that I wrongly applied!

This orchestration was carefully checked by some of my school teachers and they approved it! (although my teacher of harmony said that I overburden the French Horns, the flutes and the Timpani -but those instruments are the ones that illustrate the phenomena of a Supernova).

I will post the mp3, the scores (in TIFF format -in an WinRar archive ) and in the front page I will put the Finale 2007 mus. file.

Thanks a lot YC!

Ok, that's great. I can't say much more than what's already been said. Comments;

1) You can use 1 staff in which to place the winds, and not, for example 2 staves for each flute.

2) Great melodic work for all instruments. Most players would be happy.

Most players would be happy.

I really hope so! :P

Thanks for the comment!

Lovely piece!:P Not much else to say, but congrats on getting it performed, it really deserves it.:)

Thank you very very much for your support! :)

Wow, I love it. I can really picture the theme you were going for. Oh and great that you're getting it perforemed.

Thank you so much for your kind words... You're not the first one that tells me about the similarity... ;)

Now if only there was a way for me to be such a good music writer..

Hey... stop it! I'm almost 18 years old and I do not consider myself such a good music writer and I have much to learn and practice! Last year, when I was listening compositions from this site I would have said the same thing like you! But is not true! Anyone with a minimal knowledge in music can compose! It's about you, as an individual, if you choose to progress, to overcome obstacles through long hours of work (I mean composing, practicing, but for me is not work but pleasure :P ), through complete dedication and perseverance, through accepting the critic from the all classes of people (your music must be judged not only by teachers and/or composers but also by the ones that haven't the musical knowledge you do -it can be your friends, family etc.)!

So I believe that no matter what, you shouldn't give up hope ! I never thought that I will manage to write a playable orchestral work! But I just did that and you should take as an example of "never give up, no matter what"! :)

This is unbelievably great...

Do you really like it? :( I'm amazed how much this piece is liked, and I'm not attracted by it at all!!! Even my school teachers liked this one the most... I wonder why? :(

Have you tried my "Time Symphony" 3rd movement... Just a single person left his opinion... That's it... :sadtears: I just want to know what and how to improve, because I really want to go to a composition university, no matter what anyone say, but your feedback can be extremely important to me... The good and the bad criticisms are welcomed!

Well...I'M impressed. Major works songs are sooo loong though - it takes me forever to make one 2 minute 40 second song - I'm not sure how you guys do it (I guess with practice...) - but yes, I liked it a lot - and you should too. It's a great piece.

It's very emotional - there's a lot of movement. It feels contemporary yet it doesn't stray from a distinct classical sort of personality. I can't say anything bad about it (I don't think I'm quite qualifies in that area for that) - however, the only thing I can say that I didn't like was that it pretty much sounded like every other emotion/adventure song I've ever heard - but you pulled it off superbly - and that still takes considerable skill. Double thumbs at 12 'oclock 4 U.
