I haven't seen the actual score, but I would have to say you are not overtaxing the horns, flutes, and tympani, you use then quite superbly, in fact. While I'm talking about, you can pretty much never overtax a flautist, there will always be some crazy flautist that can play anything you put in front of them, no matter how insanely difficult. As for horn, horn players (such as myself and many I know personally) STRIVE and LIVE for the solo moments you give them. From the horn player's mouth, double thumbs up! I love horn, and any piece of music that applies to my signature is, well, kickass! In fact, my favorite bit is actually the clarinet, where it has a phrase after a sustained note in the middle register, which is then layerd upon by flute and then strings. I love that clarinet sound! So few people can actually make it function the way you did, I think John Williams is another.

that[/i'] that represents the waves of the Supernova? Think about it, a few waves, then calm, a few waves, then calm. Makes sense. Is this what you had in mind in the first place?

A supernova it's a violent and inspiring phenomena... The explosions were a "must" in the piece so... to answer your question, yes... this is what I had in mind... But the piece doesn't capture just the phenomena... An important element is the human perception...

Hello all! With the help of some extraordinary softwares I managed to orchestrate "Supernova" as I always wanted!

Here is the mp3:

Op.2 Supernova (remake) | iJigg.com - Rate and Download Free Music

But you can also find it in the first post!

P.S. There might be some bad synchronizations at some moments, but with my schedule from my school is all that I had the time to do!

Hope you'll enjoy it! Have a nice audition!

Sebastian

Sounds magnificent! A good chance to give this excellent piece another listen!

Kudos!

Sounds great! What software did you use?

Thank you all for listening! I really appreciate it!

About the software, I used Finale 2008 with EWQL Symphonic Orchestra!

Thanks for your time!

Wow, that was amazing. The horns were especially powerful. You captured the mood perfectly. I would like to know, though, are you a self-taught composer? Because, I am, and I can only dream to make something that awesome. Truly awesome!

Thanks for listening to my piece! I really appreciate it!

This is my first orchestral piece, and yes, I was a self-thought back then, having only the theory classes as my support... But, now I realize how important the harmony, orchestration and the other classes are! It wasn't a proud thing to be self-thought, for me... :(

Knowing as much as you can, learning and respecting rules will only help expanding your compositional universe! And we will always find something new to learn or to approach!

Thanks for the message!

I've done that! I's on the front page! I just want to let you know that the score is for a smaller orchestra than the current mp3 (in the mp3, the percussion and even the harp is improved and "enlarged"...) And small differences will be noticed between the score and mp3... But will still be Supernova :) !

Thanks for listening!

I know. I tried that link, but it wouldn't work. I really loved this piece, so if you could eventually, i dont care if its weeks from now post the link i would appreciate it. Keeep up the good work.

I don't seem to be able to download the MP3 piece at all - the hosting service you use doesn't seem to be there anymore.

I'd love to hear it - can you re-upload?

I thought your piece was very well orchestarted, and very well done at only 18. However my only reall complaint is that for me its not really memorable, there is no discernable melody, like John Williams would have given us. Granted you are young so you may develop into someone who can meld great orchestration combined with melodies.

For me the Horn part, i havent looked at the score, but the section that goes from D#, B, A#, G, D#, G, im not sure if its in sharps or flats so it could be Eb, but im sure you know the bit. For it doesnt seem to go anywhere, the melody itself again i say to my ears wasnt very interesting.

It wasnt until you got to the 13:25 mark and the melody that just comes after, its reminiscent of a Lord of the Rings melody, i thought yes you've got it, thats what ive been waiting for in this piece, something thats very interesting.

That should have been a theme that you could have developed on earilier in the piece, there is so many possibilities in that small teasing fragment you gave us towards the end.

14mins i thought was too long for the musical ideas that were presented, it could easily have been half the length.

Overall very good orchestration but just needing to work on themes and thematic development, especially when writing in a filmic type way oh and a great last 50secs:toothygrin:

Hi, I listened to some sections of this piece a few times now, and I like what you've done! I especially like little backgrounds or add ons you've put behind the melody, like flute runs or the bassoon scales. It's a very capturing piece that leaves you wanting more, great work!

Hi Mike!

I've changed the link! It will work now!

Hi Scriabin Sunset!

First of all thank you for your time listening to and commenting on my work...

If you look at the date, Supernova was posted in 2006... And I was 17 years old... My point is that all these were already said and you might want to try other works of mine that are more recent! :)

I do not agree on the fact that there are no discernable melodies, au contraire. They are not memorable because, back then, I wasn't interested (unfortunately) in development - symphoneta as I was after phonascus - which is the opposite, coming up with new melodies. For example, only in the first minute there are at least 3 melodies, not counting the motifs... You say lack of memorable melody, I say abundance of melodies. The subject of memorable melodies is highly subjective, and it implies repetition (variation) of a sequence of sounds and/or rhythms. A memorable melody does not imply musicality, expressiveness, depth... I'm not saying that my piece has these attributes, not even close, I'm just saying that memorability is not and should not be a pursuit, if the music does not ask it...

The piece has many flaws, but I do not think that the lack of memorable melody is on of them... And Yes, it could've been shorter, but it was the exhiliration of the copy&paste technique that overwhelmed me :P .

As a side-note, John Williams is not one of my favorites composers... Though I enjoyed his Cello Concerto...

Thanks again!

I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one, i listened to the piece again since you felt there were discernable melodies, i'll rephrase you have written melodies and motifs but they are weak against good orchestration. Music can sometimes just have a mood and doesnt need a melody to bring out the music, but again if you are arguing a case for that, Supernova is still weak in those terms.

I listened to your ballade for piano, which i quite enjoyed, very Satie like. The best piece i have heard of yours.

Ive listened to the 1st movement of your Time symphony, and for me it suffers the same as Supernova, its good orchestartion but the music is weak, there is nothing individual or interesting, that would make me want to listen to this music again, for me i just find the music lacks interest, there is no unexpected melodic turns, its all very predictable. But as i said when you are older you may develop into someone who can continue and improve on your already very good orchestration techniques along with music of that is of substance.

But the most important thing is that the composer is happy with what they have written, im just a passing what i felt as a listener while listening to your music.
