A brief Minuet (1' 45")

Featured Replies

A small piece written when in need of relaxation. Tonal. Though I didn't put a key signature it's in a key of some sort.  A departure from my usual stuff.

The ensemble is small - five winds and chamber strings.

The scoring is maybe unorthodox in my liking for the more mellow of the woodwind family, using an alto flute, cor anglais, clarinet, bass clarinet; and a flugelhorn.

Comment is always appreciated, good or bad, so please do if you're of a mind.

Really nice.  Reminds me of Prokofiev's Classical Symphony in style, with a novel tonal approach to an old form.

Nice job!  I love the old Renaissance/Baroque feel you really capture in this piece.  It really feels ancient - quite unlike some of my own specimens in the same genre.  The instrumentation and rendering also makes it seem like it's being performed on period instruments somehow.  You're the second person within the past week who has written a dance in a very unique instrumentation that includes some very quirky sounding winds in it - it opens my mind about whats possible with a dance such as this since I always seem to default to a string orchestra in my composition of these types of dances.  Thanks for the music!

I really like the style and texture of this piece! It's really keeping to the Baroque minuet style that you're really going for as I can see. I think what you could perhaps try to lengthen this piece and insert a full structure like ternary or sonata form into the piece especially, I think it will give much more depth to the piece. I like the adventurous modulations though that is more a romantic concept rather than baroque haha

Amazing music, period style with some modal and fresh tough. Thanks for posting!

Hey, THANKS!

How bad of me not to return to acknowledge all your kind comments. I'm not naturally a rude person so my apologies. Please also forgive not writing individual replies as that would extend the thread unnecessarily.

Fact is, I didn't imagine anyone would comment on this miniature because it's short and inconsequential. A relaxation from the usual chromatic things I come up with. It was fun to write and score. I'm a great fan of the Bass Clarinet so used that instead of a bassoon.

Again, thank you for your comments - much appreciated. Also again, my apologies.

Bests,

Quin.
