Colours of the Fugue - Contrapunctus I.

Featured Replies

First Fugue of my work "Colours of the Fugue". Enjoy and feel free to leave advice and any constructive criticism.

I’m no fugue expert, but the writing sounds mostly convincing to me, except maybe mss. 12-14, because of the unisons of the C# is ms. 12 and the kind of “parallel motion” feeling in ms. 14. I’m kind of nitpicking, though.

The sections where you add the accented notes that make the melody stand out in the middle voice is really great! A real highlight.

My biggest criticism is the playback — your VST has too much reverb, and it muddles things up too much. There are times where I actually like some muddiness, but a fugue is usually going to be an exception. The playback should be more crisp, with some restrained sustain pedal here and there.

I don’t know whether you’ve already finished your set here — if not, I’d recommend adding some up-tempo fugues for variety.

This was really cool! Thanks for sharing 🙂

Thanks for the well structured feedback and I agree with your criticisms. And yes I am going to continue this set with some faster up tempo fugues. Thanks for the advice! And thanks for listening!
