Sound Libraries

Featured Replies

Does anyone know of any sound libraries out there that work with finale that I can download?

Finale has a wide range of instruments, but I want more, more MORE!!!!!!

Jus' kidding. I need to a find a few more sound libraries, preferably free. If you know of any, give a shout...

Garritan Personal Orchestra, EWQL Symphonic, Vienna Symphonic, Miroslav Vituous...

What you'll be looking for is EWQL though, all Native Instruments sound libraries are fantastic. Not free though.

Darn. I'm a little short on cash, as my only income comes from playing at weddings, and my mom won't buy me anything until I get straight A's.

I've had my eyes on GPO for a while, but how much is EWQL Symphonic?

~Kal

EWQL is significantly more expensive than GPO.

Ouch...I'm gonna have to do some heavy begging. Maybe subliminal messaging will work...hmm.....:)

You should just get GPO with the student pricing, it's a good library.

I read in a snowflake:

Download it...

there used to be this state university link that post their own recorded instrumental samples. They have a whole slew of orchestral instruments with 3 layers each. i think it's university of Iowa. google it up.

however, they're in flac format. you'll have to program them yourself into the correct samplers. but the samples are high quality.

Unfortunately none of the good things are free. :(

(Yeah, understatement)

Sorry to double post...

Is EWQL better that GPO?

Yes. Much much better, assuming you're talking about EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Gold and above. Their Silver version is essentially the equivalent to GPO only with a choir and some other differences.

There's some debate about which is better, I personally think that GPO is a little more versatile than EWQL Silver in terms of dynamics and articulations, but EWQL sounds a little better...kind of. :(

Vienna > EWQL :P

I never actually used GPO, but I have heard the sampling. Obviously Sampling wise, EWQL is better. But GPO has dry sets, which by itself owns EWQL. Which is the same reason I dislike EWQL, the reverb. Obviously, if you want to overcome that problem, you could get EWQL Platinum... which costs a fortune.

I'm not saying that the reverb sucks, it's awesome, makes it sound better too. But the simple fact that you can only use pre-recorded reverb samples just loses the value. It makes everyone's music who use EWQL sound the same... to a point where I can say "Yep, that's East West Orchestra".

Also I think the Kompakt Engine that EWQL uses is very inefficient while sampling could be reduced for a "lite" version.

But on the bright side, it's easier to use than Vienna. Many people aren't willing to spend the time to learn some basic sampling and mastering so I guess EWQL is the way to go.

Difficult question...

I use EW, but GPO users have come to provide some perfect demos over the past months! :-/

To all students there are the EDU versions of products which are significally lower priced that the ordinary ones.

But EW, you're looking at at least 99$ and another 150$ for xp pro (silver edition)...

Very true, but Vienna's also bloody expensive :P

GPO is quite nice in terms of sound quality - it can be made to sound wonderful, but it lacks versatility in terms of articulations and instruments, especially the percussion section.

Sound libraries are the most useful things in regarding easier and more efficient composition. Where do I begin with this whole music composition software and sound library thing. What do I want to get and how do I get it for the absolute cheapest? I don't need a lot in my program at all, just the very basic basic things and that is it. I just want a very superb sound library. What do you recommend?

Thank you,

- Matt

I would recommend Garritan Personal Orchestra for sure. You should decide between that and EWQL Silver. Personally, I find GPO to be a little more versatile and nice sounding - especially the strings - but ultimately you'll have to listen to samples and decide.

If you need more help, you can contact me outside the forum. :P

How about a recommendation for notation software--cheap as can be and very basic... one notch above Notepad.

Well in order to use sound libraries, you're going to need to spend some good money on notation software. I recommend Finale, but you can't use sound libraries with NotePad Plus (which is one notch above Notepad).

I would recommend you get Finale 2007, it comes with a version of Garritan Personal Orchestra - very convenient. Try for the student price, it'll get you a great discount. :P

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not the percussion....

So percussion-wise, EWQL is better? I'm looking for more than the basic base drum, snare, triangle thing. I need sleigh bells, wind chimes, vibes (of course), tam-tams, congos, cowbells, ratchets, the works!

_I am not crazy.

Is there any difference in the actual software between the Student Finale and the regular Finale 2007?

Most Edu versions, cannot be used commercialy. Take msuc notice to the license notice before you actually open any enveloppe, or box, or whatever. After that, licesne broken and "approoved" and you cannot sell it or take it back.

USE FRUITY LOOPS!!!! the most powerful cheap and useful programm ive ever seen... u can import midi files and sintetize them with wav's THAT MEANS REAL SOUNDS.

Sorry to double post...

Is EWQL better that GPO?

it is true that you get what you pay for. there are many version of EWQL at different price ranges. The more expensive ones are going to sound much better than GPO and have more flexibility.

Which EW? Silver is the same as GPO more or less

Gold seems better and Platinum IS better!

BUT: GPO has many advantages and I've heard wonderous things done with it, that no EW library could've pulled off. Mainly that there are no articulations really, but you can shape the sound as you like.

Any you pick up at this point will be fine more or less for a year or so. After that you will need something better I reckon...
