Solitude for Solo Piano

Featured Replies

PROGRAM NOTE

In this work, I tried to express through music all my feelings while standing alone in contemplative mood by the window on a rainy afternoon...

Hi @nostalgia,

I like the opening texture with tone clusters in left hand and the harmless melody in the right hand. It sounds like while you are contemplating in your right hand the rain is mesmerising in the left hand. I like the development as well. I like at the end the mind is not disturbed by the somber mood finally.

I think b.21 and 22 is not playable at all by most pianist with the right hand playing a tenth simultaneously, unless you don’t need them to be played together.

Thx for sharing!

Also a very nice and interesting piece. However, although it has a clear part structure, it seems to me that it does not have as much directionality as others.
I still think that the score is thought from a “theoretical” point of view in terms of its playability. I think that the same could be written simplifying those parts where the hands are crossing for a fast note, etc...

The music absolutely reflects your intent ... as you stated it in your posting.  It is an interesting work full of dissonance; however, there is a lovely/intimate musical lyricism - that rings through out.

I just revised few measures (mm. 21-22, 24) for this one to make wide LH leaps much easier. Also, I put fingerings for all notable hand exchanges to make it clear...

All the other measures are definitely playable after practice for me - they will be even easier for piano majors since the tempo is pretty slow...

Please see the attached score and audio, and feel free to give me any comments!

Thanks - Edward

Hi @nostalgia!

I listened to the most recently updated version.  A nice piece made up of chord clusters and pentatonic melodies and chromaticism!  It does sound quite contemplative - like solitude is expected to sound.  Thanks for sharing!
