Starlight Song

Hi I'm new here.

I just wrote this piece I call the Starlight Song

I meant it to be played with the pedal and very slowly, rubato and with feeling.

Interesting harmonies but I found the piece to be extremely static. It didn't develop or change very much at all and that made me lose interest in it - try to do something to keep the listener's attention, even if it's meant to be a simple portrayal of starlight.

Hm... Interesting. Started out ok. It only changed a little bit and not for very long though. Harmonies could use some work. TOO MANY FLIPPIN MAJOR SEVENTHS!!!!!! GAH!!!!!!! jk. Major sevenths will be the death of me. Good work for a first peice. But try to make your next one a little more interesting. I couldnt really relate the peice to starlight either.

nice, but a little boring, at least for my mood right now. I think the parallel fifths help with the calm mood, if that was what you were going for. It also seems a little too repetetive. Obviously repetition of some kind is essential, but it gets really boring if you repeat every four-bar phrase note for note immediately after the first time it comes up. Maybe you should change some of the chords in the repetitions to mix things up a bit. Of course if that was what you were going for, then by all means do what you wish.

Interesting at some point. Nothing out of this world. Simple (like I like every composition), but repetitive.

One point to highlight is the title: did you think about the starlight when you composed it or did you thought on the title after you heard the complete piece? I'd title this "Thinking below the stars", but a "starlight" makes sense within the context of the piece.

Within a piece, things must vary in some way to attract the attention of your audience. Just do minor changes to this or apply what the others said before me and compose another piece with this advices.

I used your motifs, and made an orchestral version of it, I corrected some of your mistakes, and added some of my own stuff.

I was able to listen through the midi - then tried it out. The only problem is midi and the tempo is a little high in the opening (before the repeated RH E-B) to give it a calm starlit effect. A regular tempo at 1.39 is fine though this section is a bit out of keeping with the rest.

The remainder: in live performance, played with far more refinement than midi is capable of it might come off somewhat Debussy-like with some rubato and differences in the LH & RH dynamics. No good turning the volume down because the timbre of the piano is different at p/pp. Playing it with the laptop stuck on top of the piano I can make it sound very different.

I liked it in the version I "hear". It might benefit by some of the repeats playing in different registers, an octave higher, say. But that's the sort of thing experience will suggest as you move along.

Cool piece. You had some good harmonies going on... no matter what they say- MAJOR 7THS ARE AWESOME WHEN PLAYED SLOWLY!!!!

Great little piece! I must say I disagree with those who think the music is too static. This piece reminds me a lot of the music of Erik Satie; in fact it has more variation that many of Satie's shorter piano works. And to me, Satie is not boring. The repetitions, which are never simplistic in nature, put me in a peaceful, meditative state. I like that effect a lot.
