The Finale Help Thread

Featured Replies

I'm putting a song into Finale for a class and I can't figure out something with the lyrics.

On one word I need it to look like this -> vo-glio a with a little tie thing from the second o to the a. I can't make it do the hyphen in the word without splitting it up or figure out how to make the little tie thing.

I think I figured everything else out.

It's the song "Per la gloria d'adorarvi" if that helps.

;)

I have some questions about Finale (I use 2005)

How can I make Finale play trills? I know how to write one in ... but it never gets played

I don't know about Sibelius but Finale offers a student/educational/church discount that is worth going after.

I got Finale about a year ago with a student discount, I think it was $200, (instead of $600) and at the time I was only a part-time student (two classes). I bought it through studentstore.com

They didn't even require the classes to be music classes! It's worth it to take a class at a community college if you can.

I'm wondering if Finale can provide me with tone clusters?

It'd be much help if i knew it could and how to.

For display and printing: Yes. Use the Engraver font and change the noteheads with the Special Tools palette. Since you're obviously writing modern music, I'm going to assume you're probably reasonably acquainted with the Special Tools palette by now.

For playback: No. That is, it apparently won't aleatorically create a cluster for you. If you specify notes within the range of the cluster, then change the noteheads, it will only play the notes you specify. At least that was my brief experience with it, in Finale 2005. It's entirely possible that there is something I may not know about this, since I have never actually needed to compose a tone cluster.

So, uh..

How do you make notes cross staff?

I know i owe some replies to a bunch of people in here, but don't worry! I will answer thine' questions in a bit!

THe brass in GARritan at least 2006 is horrendous(my opinion) and i do not think it has A CELESTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

other than that the strings sound good you old traditionalist

I have Windows xp and i have finale 2005, But the problem is I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO GET MY FILES INTO PDF!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please help :P :P

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but to make a PDF, you need to have Adobe - not the free one that only reads PDF files, but the full software. It isn't cheap - at least it wasn't when I bought it. What I have to do in Finale 2005 is to use the Print option and choose the Adobe PDF Writer that acts as a virtual printer that "prints" my file out as a PDF.

Hmmm....something just occurred to me...since I have Adobe on my machine, I'm just assuming Finale 2005 is just using the Adobe PDF writer I installed, rather than supplying its own.

Does anyone else know if Finale 2005 actually came with a PDF writer?

From now on, please ask new questions about finale or sibelius as a separate topic. Thank you.

Lately I've been learning Finale 2005, and it is so retarded. I composed a piece in it, my Adagio for Strings, and then I wished to go back and edit a measure or two. Too bad! Apparently I don't know how in the hell to make a measure 2/2 instead of 4/2, because each time I do it, it shoves all the music like on top of each, over a bar or so. I can't seem to figure it out! So it seems to me that Finale is suited more for people who know exactly what they want when they compose, and do not have to experiment or play around much. I use it for easy compositions or engraving, which it is a snap to use for. But anything else and I'm lost. Sibelius is my compositional tool forever because it's not overly complicated, and even though it has its flaws, it's easier to maneuver in.

You just have to (a) specify how many bars you want changed to 2/2 - and then (b) choose the option to rebar the music, and

Hi. I'm making a score with a piano part and some instruments on top on Finale 2003. I would like to make the instrument parts smaller, so that the pianist can read from the score easily. I figured out how to shrink the note head size, but everything else stays the same (and looks ridiculous). How can I shrink some, but not all, of the staves on a score (including the clefs, distance between the staff lines, stems, etc.)? Thanks.

Use the resize tool (looks like a %) and select only what you want to change the size of.

Yes, with the Resize tool in Page View you can right click a staff and choose "Resize Staff." Try 75%.

Finale 2005 here. Isn't there a way to have more than 16 channels?... I'm composing for orchestra and it's a pain to have all the strings in the same channel...

Okay, I have a question about Finale 2005 that nobody at my school was able to help me with. I'm transcribing a part for Birdland, in which the drum part has mostly one-bar repeats. However, many of those measures also have brass hits in them, so it ends up looking as if there are two different staff styles on the same measure. I know this isn't possible, because I've tried to apply different staff styles and it just changes all of the layers. My question is: How in the world can you add visible notes to a one-bar repeat staff style?

Anyone know if there is a way to combine staves?

Like, if I have two sax staves, can I combine them into one, with both parts on it?

Finale 2005 doesn't support more than 16 channels for the softsynth, but you can use other devices to get up to a total of 64 channels.

In the MIDI menu >> MIDI Setup, click Advanced. For the base channel 17 box you can select a different device (such as Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth). The sounds will be different on that device, but you might find some that are usable. Finale 2006 added the ability to have 128 channels, and they all can be assigned to the softsynth or the included Finale GPO.

Staff tool -> Staff menu -> Define Staff Styles. From the box at the top, choose the One-bar repeat style. Click the Select button next to "Alternate Notation." Check the options for "Show notes in other layers" and "Show items attached to notes in other layers." Take note of the "Apply to Layer" (no need to change it). Click OK and OK. Now notes that are in layers other than the "Apply to Layer" should show up in the same measure as your one-bar repeat styles.

Btw, you probably know this already, but a quick way to apply that style is to highlight a measure and press the letter O.

If the two staves have notes that share the same rhythm and you want them combined onto the same stems, highlight both staves with the Mass Edit tool, go to the Mass Edit menu -> Utilities -> Implode Music.

If instead the two staves have notes with different rhythms (at least at some points) and it would work better to keep them on different stems, you can do this as long as the staves each have notes only in one layer. You need to put one staff in layer 1 (the top notes) and the other in layer 2 (the bottom notes). To change the layer of notes for one staff, highlight the measures of that staff with the Mass Edit tool. Go to the Mass Edit menu -> Move/Copy Layers. Move, for example, the contents of layer 1 to layer 2. Click OK. Now in the Options menu choose "Show Active Layer Only" (some versions of Finale have this in the View menu). Switch to the layer of the staff that you wish to copy from. Highlight that staff with the Mass Edit tool and drag copy it to the other staff (for which the notes will be invisible right now). Finally, uncheck "Show Active Layer Only."

Sounds longer than it actually takes.

andersonalex,

Thank you for answering nintenboy5, Berlioz and Burger Deluxe's questions. I have moved your responses into this thread for organisational purposes.
