Few pieces I wrote for a game...

Featured Replies

I recently wrote 3 pieces for a game called "The Secret of Neiyon" and I'm looking for criticism on them, as well as suggestions on how I can improve the overall songs.

The first midi is the battle theme, which I took a little inspiration from Baiten Kaitos when I wrote it.

The second one is the WIP for a village theme...

The third is the title theme...

im not really the guy to talk to about rock or anything like that. but the second one is ok. its kinda epic. extend it to a full song. complete what you have. i guess nothing on the second one either. i hate that quality of sound but extend it to get a full feel from it.

Hey there,

The battle theme was very typical of a Japanese style RPG battle theme, so you got that part right. I would have turned the instruments up and the percussion down though; it's balanced the wrong way. And the ending/lead in to the loop sucks.

The town theme sounds somewhat noble, almost like a castle town theme. Pretty and effective, I liked it.

Your theme song is a bit of a joke really. Compared to the others it's far too simplistic and underdeveloped; I'm hoping that it's also a work-in-progress because that "ending" hardly counts as one - just sounds like you decided to stop writing. Work on this one more.

Overall you've got the Japanese simplistic, traditional VG soundtrack feel going so keep it up if that's what the game requires. :P

Thanks for the crit. However, on the battle theme you say the ending/lead part sucks, but I'm not exactly sure what section your talking about. Yes, I was going for the typical feeling, but say I wanted to go for a less typical feeling, what should I do different? If it's that part at the end with no drums, I'm probably thinking of taking that out, and going straight into the loop.

No problem :P

On the battle theme, I meant that very last passage in the MIDI starting around 0:36 where everything suddenly drops off to just the guitar solo; it sounds lame.

If you want to get away from that stereotypical sound then lose the cheesy rock beat and the stereotypical Japanese RPG battle theme instrumentation. Try being creative, it'll help make things sound more unique.

I see. Well, updated the battle theme. I took out that part at the end, because I agree with you, it just plain sucked.

If you guys call THIS typical, I give up on trying to be non-typical.

Besides, not all the songs are going to be outrageously unique. Some of the best RPG series out there including Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Breath of Fire, are filled with songs that you would label as "typical", so I don't exactly feel bad because all those games had successful soundtracks. Heck, games in the "Tales of" series, still use this "typical" form of RPG music, and it works well. Sure not every song on those OSTs is "typical", but a good number of them are.

Yes, each one is typical in a way. But they all are different in their own ways as well :)

very very nice theme, now develop it :)

Just to address your previous comment, the reason that Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc have some pieces I would consider "typical" is because they're the games that solidified that style.

They aren't technically "typical" since they're the beginning of that trend.

Oh, and the battle theme is still typical but the ending is better now and I like it a bit more overall. Now stop fretting over this and keep writing more music. :)
