I agree with bomligeti on a number of things. To me this chart looks restricting; as a clarinetist, I don't see any reason why a true gliss can't be notated across any range of notes.

On the clarinet I don't think Debussy's Premiere Rhapsodie will ever stop being my favorite, both to play and listen to.

I'm a clarinetist and this is one of my favorite pieces. Some of the best from Copland. I mean I might be biased as it is my main instrument but it shows the composer's mastery in writing with his 'bittersweet lyricism'.

I joined what seems to me to be long time ago under another account that I forgot. I was using Google to search for a site that would allow people my age (around 14 at the time) to post scores and comment on each others'. For some design reason or another, I grazed through this site several times thinking it was just some static information site. Little did I know at the time that it was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks to whomever I can thank for making this site a reality.

good find! I personally can attest to number 4: "Take a shower". It's amazing what ideas come to you when water is pouring down on you I also agree with 34 and 36:" Create a framework. Instead of trying to rely on pure inspiration, think within the box you create for yourself." "Don’t judge your ideas until you have plenty to judge." You are not always going to have divine inspiration; composition is something that requires effort and intelligence from the composer's own mind. Create plenty of ideas and choose which you like.

I agree with Chopin also, although the remainder of my favorite choices seem to be named in this thread. His music just feels like a perfect fit for the instrument. Not discrediting Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Bach, etc... I praise their music with all my heart.

I seem to be similar to many people here in that I wish I could play a string instrument, preferably the violin. However I haven't started learning a new instrument in many years and I might not be able to tolerate the beginning learning process without a ton of time on my hands, which I lack at the moment.

How modern is "modern"? 20th century? 21st century? Some of the greatest composers lived in the past century. And there are many great composers still alive today. Most of the works for concert band fit into this genre EDIT: I am incredibly sorry I did not notice the date which this was last posted. Feel no need to respond.

My first piece for strings, orchestrated for solo violin and string orchestra. I am primarily a woodwind/piano player, so I have had no previous knowledge of string technique. I should probably note that layered notes should all be played divisi, except for the soloist. Rendezvous

This looks like it would be very fun to play and perform. If this is a marching arrangement, are you sure you want to be giving all the woodwinds solos at the beginning? But overall something that the general audience would no doubt enjoy. Delightful.

That's true, I agree that it resulted in a "collection of short ideas on after the other". This was actually my first composition, and at the time I kept asking myself "what comes next after this part?" Longer phrases? That may be what I need to start doing. Thank you siwi! And thanks AlanGonzalez. If and when I make this work more complete, I will definitely recycle (elaborate) on the melody!

I don't know anything about cello playing, but I play the piano. I must say it was very fun to read. The only parts that I didn't particularly enjoy were the repeating tritones such as in measure 34. It's pretty muddy for an interval like that down there on the piano when nothing else is going on. Of course, I'm sure you have your reasons. It does fit in the style of the piece, which I did enjoy. Good job!
