Golden Mellow

Featured Replies

Here is a new orchestral piece of mine. It tells a story of a New York City bum who befriends a young puppy dog, which he named Mellow. As the years went by, Mellow died, leaving the bum alone in the harsch enviroment of NY. Time went on, and when the bum's own days ticked down to a final, the two friends meet up in Heaven.

Wow... now this is brilliant... I really like it :D! the song sounds like it could be used for a movie... it is trully an amazing sounding track... wow! If this site had a system like deviantart, where you could have favourites on works, i would definately add this to my faves!

Extremely emotionally moving! The work's cinematic expressions overwhelm the audience with waves of musical passion and expression. Bravo! - like major-ly.

Thank you so much for you encouraging words!

How old are you? Please consider a major in Composition with a focus in film scoring. Please. This is something that could win an Oscar.

And major props to you for writing something that I didn't stop listening to, like I usually do on this forum.

did you write the music, or just recorded each part out of the blues?

also, is this a real orchestra? or is it MIDI? and what program if so.

  • Author

I didn't write a score, I played each instrument manually with Cakewalk Sonar. The sounds are in fact MIDI, yet heavily modified and sampled :o

The idea of this forum is to post your music and get comments by your fellow composers. The only way this works is if you comment on your fellow composers works. Otherwise this becomes just another site to show off music. I think that there is enough of them out there already.

Join in the fun of listening to and commenting on others' works. It is a learning experience and your comment may be the one to help to inspire a budding musician or solve a composers dilemma.

I listened to this piece hoping I could offer some advice, but I really don't have any to give. Naturally, this piece is very cinematic in genre and probably wouldn't be heard often in a concert hall, but it is very beautiful for what it is. I was equally impressed with (and envious of) your sound quality, especially on the flute. You should really look into professional film scoring, if you haven't already.

Thanks. I suppose it is more cinematic in nature, yes...

Noir7, I know you from ichigos. I think that you should take what rolifer just said in consideration.

Ricky, you can't give much advice since there is no score, it is hard to give some solid feedback without one. Specially since it is written with a sequencer it is extremely hard to hear if this or that is out of range etc.

Noir7, you do write nice music, a lot because of the nice sound library you have, but what is a piece with the solid score that you can hold in your hand and other people can hold in their hands to so that it can be played by a real-life orchestra?

^ No instrument is out of range, since the library I use have real recorded instruments. Also, scores are overrated. If you can't judge a piece of music without looking at a score, there's something wrong. Music is just that for me, music. No pens or papers or 'hopes' of real-life orchestras performing my compositions. With a sequencer, I make them sound the way I want without much restriction.

uhm, with restriction, if I may add. The sequencer does not always have right. You could never achieve a proper balance really, since I guess you don't insert your notes AND you regulate the volume at your own liking not according to the instruments restrictions, am I right?

P.S Why don't you comment other people's works instead of seeking praise. You are not here to learn, you are here to find praise, so that you later on get hubris and thing you overwhelm all other.

I do feel the occasional breeze here up on my piedestal, I agree.

The thing though, is that I think many people who lay too much weight on technical aspects such as excessive scores, proper instrumentation volume regulation, orchestra seat positioning and so on often pay for it in the overall musicality. Those composers obviously want their listeners to have compositional interest (such as this forum's members) for them to appreciate their work.

My main, and only, concern is how to reach out for those who don't have a musical/compositional background and still fall for a piece. Therefore, I try to use easy passages, yet still striving for nice modulations, melodies and themes which every average Joe can appreciate -- without having to go through a score (whatever that has to do with how 'good' the music is, I have no clue...).

- Noir7. The ethically challanged moderator of Ichigos.

We here on YC are not the average people, that you should know. We have, I think, good music knowledge.

Noir7, I really did enjoy your piece, and thought it was very musical, and I understand what you are saying about "creating music for the people" and I respect that. I think the reason why people are getting so hot and bothered is that you are a member of this forum and have only posted in threads that were started by you. I think you could find that YC is a really enjoyable place and you could make some friends if you get out there and meet the community. This can be done by visiting Off-Topic, or reviewing other's works. It's nice to have you here, and your music is very welcome, so do stick around.

Yes, and the point is well taken. It's just that, as you said earlier; "And major props to you for writing something that I didn't stop listening to, like I usually do on this forum." Perhaps I felt the same way, but in a much more full quantity. If I didn't bear myself to listen through any piece, my comments wouldn't be much fair at all.

Perhaps it's just my narcissistic nature speaking, or maybe the thin air up here on my lofty perch is getting the better of me. In any case, for the mere sake of not trying to antagonize you further I've decided to stop writing before I can complete this sente

Narcissus died alone.

Noir7, what sample library(ies) do you use? And also, could you elaborate on how you go about making it sound as real as you do? Because I've hardly heard much sample-based orchestral music that sounds this good.

@nolifer: The cellphone industry isn't even that big anymore, it's actually declining.

@last life: They're all EWQL products. As for the 'making-it-sound-real', there's no definate answer. It just takes a huge chunk of time to get them to sound great. They eat up a lot of RAM, I might add.
