Harry Potter Competition

Featured Replies

So, I started a thread earlier about the incosistancy of the Harry Potter scores, and said, let's just pick a new composer! Then people started getting excited...a little too excited? We shall never know. But I am here to give you, a YC Forum member, the chance to go down into history, an eternal glory, and write the opening to the next Harry Potter Film! Or some other piece of music that has to do with Harry Potter and the themes used in any of the movies.

The Rules:

  • You must write a piece for orchestra using a theme that has been stated in the past five Harry Potter movies.
  • The piece can be used as the opening, the end credits, a certain scence, or a certain character's theme.
  • Since there is going to be an absence of an actual film with the music, we ask you to please explain what is going on in the scene, and what specific motifs belong to if being used.
  • You must compose an original arrangement, and not just use the themes and re-ochestrate them. Do something different!

This Competetion will close on September 30, 2007.

If this interests you, and you want to participate, please post below, and I will add you to the list of participants.

Count me in!

I would like to participate actually. However, if i don't manage to get anything done (more than likely) I will judge

I want to participate!

I am really sure that it is impossible to be the first for me, but it is great fun!

If it's of any help, here's a YouTube video of me playing a number of the Harry Potter themes (all of them from the 1st movie) for those not familiar with all the soundtrack:

and a higher quality audio version:

Very nice playing, mate  I enjoyed the performance a lot!

Yea, me too. You are a member, you are welcome to join the competition if you orchestrate it, but we will need a score.

This looks like a lot of fun. Is there a deadline to sign up? I'm not sure if I will have time, but if I do I would like to do it.

If you could scratch my name off, please

becasue I will most likely not have my midi problem sovled by then

and i cant post midi and im just reall screwed.

Thanks anyway!

You don't need a MIDI, just a sound file. You can also give an MP3. What notation program are you using?

I definitely want to have a go at this!

I'm gonna give this my best shot! Yay film scoring!!

Sibelius 5, and the virtual sounds arnt working and it wont let me extract audio

Couple of questions?

So you take maybe 1 or 2 Current Harry Potter themes and Improvise or Improve on them?

Or You take your own thoughts and Improvise Harry Potter into it?

Can I be a judge?

You can do what ever you want. :D Just make sure there is some kind of suggestion that it is Harry Potter. You can even compose your own theme for something or someone. Be creative. Just give a summary of where the music would fall in the movie when you submit.

So we can take say... Hedwigs theme... and make it into something completely sad and enter that?

Count me in, too! I don't know how much I can get done cuz im going on vacation for two weeks, but I'd looove to do this!!!
