"Download: The Game" - Main Theme Song

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!

I know it's been a long time since I've posted something, so I figured I'd officially share this latest piece of mine with you.

It's the theme song for a game called "Download" which I'm helping to make. Small project.

Anyhow, the game is a big mash of different genres; mystery/horror/drama/action/adventure. That made it interesting to come up with a theme song that successfully captures all of that.

Take a listen and see how well I did. All comments are appreciated!

Download - Main Theme - eSnips, share anything

I find the music really nice to listen to. Love the percussion and the bells. And the effects, very cool. I love the way how you transition into different melodies and such, something I could learn from you.

EDIT: Did you make this in Finale first and then add the effects using something like Cubase?

This is a remarkable tour de force - a fine piece of music. I can hear mystery, action, drama, adventure - horror may be there but I am not a fan of this so it may not resonate with me. I too am curious as to how these excellent effects were created.

heheh, you used some of those effects on the Outbreak Solanum theme...;)

This is great, you've done a great job capturing all the different elements. I love the 'Jack Sparrow-esque' string part towards the end.

I don't like the synth bassline though...

Awesome. I can hear mystery and drama combined nicely at the start

I like the percussion and as it builds up towards the end i like the bells and strings, they help make the piece feel 'intense' therefore giving it a nice action feel

The Oboe or whatever it is (sorry i suck at instruments haha) is also very interesting and gives a nice adventure sort of touch to it

Overall very nice theme!

Link us to the game when its done!

Also, how do you come to making themes for games? I'd love to but I don't know where to find the jobs from haha any useful info?

Great piece. Lots of variation - maybe even a little too much. I think maybe you should stick to each theme a bit longer and elaborate on it. I can imagine the music fitting very well to the genre of game you described though.

Thanks very much for your comments! I'm going to try to address them all.

The piece was written entirely from within Finale and then slightly edited and, of course, mastered in Adobe Audition. The effects are all courtesy of my lovely sound libraries ;)

I'm glad you mentioned that; interestingly enough, the person who asked me to write the theme said: "Try to use some of those neat effects that you used for the Outbreak Solanum soundtrack. Those were neat."

So I did.

I'm sorry you didn't like the synth bass line. That actually happens to be one of my favourite bits. I'm aware that it sort of clashes with the otherwise more traditional instrumentation, but it's necessary for the feel of the game, which is very modern.

Well, to be perfectly honest with you, most of the jobs that I'm accepting these days come from people who seem to have found my work. They come to me and ask me to score their stuff. The key to reaching this point is basically good advertising. Become an expert in marketing your own work; build up a network of people who know about your talents and skills and make sure they have access to some samples to listen to...things will come, slowly but surely. :)

Finrod, you bring up a good point about the quick transitions. The reason for it is that the piece is the title theme and serves as a sort of "overture" to the rest of the soundtrack, so some of the other themes are introduced briefly - to be expanded upon later in the score.

Thanks again to all of you for your comments :)

It's not that I'm against the idea of a synth bassline, it's just it sounds kind of dated. You say that the feel is modern, but it sounds more like something from an 80's track. What did you use to make it? You could make it much more modern sounding.

And was the jaunty string bit in any way inspired by the Jack Sparrow theme?

Actually the reason I used the synthy bass in that particular style is because the game's graphics at this point closely resemble very dated graphics and thus sort of require some acknowledgment from the music or the two would just clash.

The jaunty string bit, actually, wasn't inspired by Jack Sparrow - I just took the synth bass line and transfered it to the bassoon and wrote what came next in my head.

Ah right, It makes sense now. Thats the problem with reviewing incidental music with out the visuals...

Oh cool. It was more the accompanying string part that reminded me of the theme...

This was really cool man, probably the best work I have heard on the forum so far to my tastes! Keep it up.

M, yes I figured as much. The string part was a lot of fun.

Harrowing, thank you very much! I'm very happy to hear that you enjoyed it that much. I think I like your tastes :sadtears:

How did I miss this?!?

Again, very sexy music Marius, keep it coming :D

You just gotta pay more attention, I guess! :D

Thanks, Mark. I will endeavour to keep the sexy flowing.
