Slow Movement Help

Hi

I am working on a violin concerto. I finished the first movement, and now am on the the second. But, now that I realize it, I can't think of how to start! I was wondering if you guys could help me by telling me how you start to compose a theme of a second movement. I really appreciate it.

Try to restate some of the main subject, but twisted enough not to considerated an imitation or anything.Also, contrast the new one against the original, so as this one sounds more melodic and cantabile... my 2 cents in this =)

William K., is it? Oh, I'm SO glad you're writing a violin concerto! Being a violinist myself, I'm saddened that the only concertos produced here are for the piano... Please post your first movement! (I would also like the sheet music later.)

Some of the most beautiful themes in violin concerto second movements are the ones from Mozart's Third Violin Concerto, Bruch's First Violin Concerto and Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto: try listening to them at Amazon with their sampler!

Also, what is the style and difficulty of the work so far? Once again, I would like to tell you I'm very excited to see a violin concerto being produced! :blink:

Yes, I am writing a Violin Concerto. However, there are a few things you should know. Don't get your hopes up. This is only my second work. (My first was a Piano Concerto). The first movement is mostly unison. BUT, the second movement is much better with harmony and such. Don't get me wrong though: My first movement is good; Nice melody, and things. Because of the fact that I just started composing, I only restated the theme in the dominant. I sorta devoloped it and well, you'll see if I post it here. But give me a break, I'm only 13!!!! lol. I would put the piece and a intermediate.

Well anyway, to anwer the other question: I think that it is a Baroque-ish style, which isn't my way of writing (My piano concerto was more Classical). Sadly, a neglected instrument which hasn't been admired in it's entirety.

I think that it is a Baroque-ish style, which isn't my way of writing (My piano concerto was more Classical)

Is it just the composition itself or also the instrumentation? (EX: Basso Continuo Harpsichord.)

Also, there is a "mixture" of the Baroque and Classical styles called Rococco, which ocurred somewhat 1755-1765. Could it be like that?

No, it is not the instrumentation. No harpsichord in this one! :) Yes, I would say its a mixture between the Baroque and Classical styles. Thanks for your support on this piece. I was seriously considering throwing it out even though I liked it (The first movement that is). When I couldn't compose the second movement, I got REALLY frusturated (sp?). But yeah, thanks. 12 huh? You're probably one of the youngest! (im guessing. I dont really know). I think I'm going to post my Piano Concerto on the site, but I still don't know. I'll post the Violin Concerto when its done.

I know Nico. I did some work on it. Its not the best, but its not the worst (hopefully not the worst. lol). My second movement is SOOOO much better than the first harmony wise :D . I don't like it as much, but in that sense, its better. I can't wait to start on the 3rd movement, but it wouldn't be wise to rush the second. This concerto won't be very long. I think its going to be round about 15 minutes. Not the longest, but not the shortest! I like it so far over- all. Don't worry, Nico, I'll work on harmony in the rest of the 2nd and all of the 3rd. ;)

BTW, I was wondering if the second movement of a concerto or something has to be REALLY REALLY slow. I mean, the second movement of my Violin Concerto is a little fast, but it has its slow moments. Its not set at quarter note= 120, but its not set at quarter note= 40 either. I kinda maybe set it at quarter note= 60 ;) , which is kinda fast but not really slow. On my next concerto, I was going to make it alot slower, like quarter note= 40 or something, but I've already started the second movement and I like it at the tempo its at. So, all in al, my question is this: Does the second movement of a concerto HAVE to be set at a tempo like quarter note= 40, or can it be a little faster (like 60 :D )? Thanks alot, you guys! :D

No, of course not: that would be an Andante. Suits it fine just as well.
