Maybe send them all to one person, then that one person distributes them to all the judges and the judges report their scores back to that one person who then tallies the scores?Of course, then everybody would have to make sure they're name isn't on the score anywhere... Dirk Gently Posted January 3, 2008 Share Posted January 3, 2008 I like that system.....just don't have any name on the score (easy enough to do in Finale, for sure, and other notation programs, I'm assuming), and send all the files to one person, who will reveal the identities at the end of the judging. This ensures any favoritism is absent and it's the music alone that is judged. I'm not saying there would be any favoritism, but I'd say it's better to be safe than sorry ;). Posted January 3, 2008 Share Posted January 3, 2008 It could work like this: each participant sends their entry to the foreman, who would then obviously know whose are whose, and he can post all their entries in anonymity. The judges then send their scores to the foreman, who tallies, and announces the winner. Maybe we could also have a public poll, where any and all YC members can vote and the winner of the poll will have a couple bonus points added to his/her total (nothing big, of course), since there are only a handful of judges and such represent the views and opinions of only those few people. We'll either have to remove a vote from that selection, or the other participants would have to vote as well, whereas if everyone voted for their piece, all entries would automatically get +1, so the differences between the entries would be equal, and I don't think anyone would vote for a piece other than theirs, unless they don't want their piece to be in an equal state with the other pieces. Nothing too big, but enough so that it factors in the decision of the people. Though, truthfully, I think we could avoid any confusion and stuff if we just didn't have the participants vote (because what composition contest does that, anyway :P? None that I've heard of...) But this is pretty obvious to anyone looking at who voted - someone who just joined and has no posts is obviously a fake. It's then up to the moderators to check IP addresses to see who they need to disqualify. I've ran many competitions in the past, and just letting anyone vote, including the participants voting for themselves (which is 100% fair), is fine enough and not complicated at all. As for anonymity, it really ends up not being as big a deal as you think. Besides, even if some people here are more known than others, people who sign up as judges usually know to be fair and honest anyway. But it's not a big deal. A point system, with a number correlating to how many public votes a piece got, added to how many points a piece got from the judges, would be good.
