Two-Part Invention

Featured Replies

I composed this piece about a year ago. I am not sure how well it meets the formal qualifications for an invention, other than it having two-part counterpoint. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I have finale, but can't get to it right now. Would you mind posting a pdf version and/or midi file (both would be great) for those who don't have access to finale? You can create a pdf (at least I can) on Finale (I don't know what year you have...) by going to File|Print, choosing the "settings/setup" button, then selecting PDF under the pulldown bar for printer selection. Then, when you click "print," Finale should convert the file to a .pdf format.

Here I did it for you.

Thank you very much, alchemynut, that was very kind. I guess I'll have to find some pdf and midi software for the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed that..hmm...I liked it alot, tis all....hehehe

very passionate ending by the way

Its is an Invention, nice little theme and you change key much, is all good, but it would be better you use more themes :)

roman - Thank you, I'm glad you liked it.

SimenN - Thanks, I'll keep it in mind to use more themes in the future.

On a technical note, the keychange in bar 13(2nd bar of page two) does not work, it would sound better if you removed the seemingly random flat, and sharped all the C's and F's.

Bar 12 needs work.

Other than that it a peaceful little piece, it almost sounds like someone practicing scales and arrpegios.

Thanks, Paginani. In measures 12 and 13, I was attempting to make a transition back to the original theme, but perhaps it was too forced. Though they sound fine to my ear, I will consider revising them since I have no theoretical justification for them.

Two-point counterpoint is notoriously difficult to write, but I think you do a good job here. Some of it sounds contrived, but it's interesting to listen to. The shapes you've employed are very Bachian, the harmonies and syntax less so; your harmonic rhythm is too irregular, the phrase-lengths too unpredictable for it to sound like baroque pastiche. That didn't bother me though - it's a nice sketch, and reveals the ability you have for counterpoint.

Overall, I think you'd do well to explore the neo-baroque idiom. There's still lots left to be said in that language.
