The Drunken Hungarian's Dance

Featured Replies

I was going for Slavic but a friend of mine said it's more Baroque. Any thoughts, criticisms etc. very much appreciated.

A score would be useful.

well I can say that it's definitely not baroque, In addition, it's not Slavic either it has a definite peasante feel, but that feeling is relentless. this criticism would likely be less pointed if their were a score provided....:(

I would say this is neo classical if anything. Hardly baroque and does not feel Slavic, it feels more like happy go lucky Italian drinking songs. So you got the drinking part wrong, but It does not feel slavic. Try using the Hungarian Minor. I personally think it's a lot of fun though. I applaud you. However, if you want it to be slavic sounding, I might be in some more raised fourths or something. OR you could supply a score.

Break a leg

PS. The last twenty/thirty seconds sound closer to Slavic than the rest of the piece.

Thanks for all the comments, positive and critical. I also apologize for the lack of a score, I usually write things out in fruity loops then fix up the time and key signatures in Anvil Studio before I print it to pdf... this particular one kept corrupting.

it sounds drunk. i like it. but i think its neither slavic nor baroque.

Hmm...I don't think this has the sound you're going for if you're trying to evoke drunken Hungarians...it doesn't have that wild, racing Magyar, or more often, Gypsy sound. A bit too orderly for that. But the more ordered parts do give it some feel of the Baroque.

However, it does have potential, and I would like to hear it arranged for symphony orchestra, with a lot of the parts going to strings. The way it is, the chords, as pretty as they are, obscure the rest of it--being all piano, it blends together, and I think it could benefit from separation via tone color. Imagine some parts played by strings, others by woodwinds, and so on. And develop it further--use repetition of themes heavily, to the point where it becomes excessive, but in different tone colors, and then trim the repetition back to ensure sufficient impression of novelty.

Speaking of drunken Hungarians, I'm not one, but possibly some live in my keyboard. I may post something in that vein soon, if anyone would like to hear it.

to make it more drunk sounding, more interesting rhythms would help a lot.
