Program for composing rock music?

Featured Replies

My friend and I are really into progressive rock and I have wanted to try composing rock for a while and getting away from my student classical works and so I compose stuff that my friend and I can actually play. After looking through certain programs I can not find a single good program for composing rock music. I usally use Finale but I have an ancient version of guitar pro from a long time ago when I used to be a guitarist (I still can play the guitar but would never define myself as a guitarist as I rarely meet guitarists that can read music yet alone know anything about it) and its horrible for writting anything. Finale 2008 doesnt have any good playback for anything other than the stereotypical classical instruments. Does anyone know of any programs with good rock instrumentation playback. I don't need it I guess but I'd rather have it.

Best thing I'd suggest for rock would be getting a recording setup - you'll never get "that sound" with synthesis, even the best kind.

Ministry of Rock is what you're after. Listen to the demos, fall in love, and go from there. Works within Finale or any other sequencer as a VST plugin.

That's beyond awesome. It's better than garritan's sounds for traditional instruments, I didn't think that would ever happen with rock music. Still its about as expensive as Finale.... which I got beause my dad's a professor and his university uses it.

Take a hint from your second quote in your signature.

I use Reason for my composition, which works... permissably, and i write metal... but i use it because i got it for free off someone who was upgrading to Reason 4.

EDIT: Went and listened to MoR.... wow.... i really wish i had $500 on me at the moment...

It doesn't look like a notation programme. At least this is the expression I get, that it's just something like sampling, not composing...if you know what I mean.

NOTION Progression

Beat me to the punch here....for $100 you can't beat Progression.

If you have any questions about the program feel free to ask me (either pm or here).

I think you should look at Guitar Pro again. It has a great feature set that is ideal for composing for rock. Also, I find it easier to actually record what I play as sound when I'm writing, in which case you might want to look at something like Sonoma RiffWorks T4 (its free!) or the full version of RiffWorks standard. That way at least you can get your ideas into an audio format, which may make it easier to TAB later.

If I'm not mistaken, Guitar Pro doesn't allow you to get rid of the tablature bar and just work with standard notation. That was a massive turn-off for me.

I wish Garritan Personal Orchestra would just add an electric guitar...

Then again, it has an acoustic guitar, and the chords sound like crap.

Guitar pro 5 is allow to close tab completely and use notation.

Ministry of Rock is fantastic. It is not a notation program, it is a sampler software/plugin that has all the sounds you need to melt your neighbor's brain.

Guitar pro is great for that kind of thing, its about $50 and works great from my experiance

Shi.....thats awesome :O I want it!

If you're using a Mac, Logic might be good for this. It allows you to use TAB or standard notation, playback is decent, and you can record audio as well. I think it retails for around $200 right now.

EDIT: I forgot to specify, the Express version of Logic retails for around $200.

As someone who is based in a rock background and has only recently moved towards classical I can say that it is a very bad idea (in my opinion) to write rock music without playing it. Rock is a type music that is very physical, and you can make a great song out of two notes depending on how you play those two notes. If you want to write rock, learn to play the instruments and build yourself a multi-track recording studio. Don't try and do it in MIDI. Truth is, if you want someone to listen to your rock music other than you and your friend, most people will think a lot less of you if you don't actually play it, no one wants to hear sampled rock music.

Just my opinion though from the experiences I've had.
