piano_player18 Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Medieval Fantasy - Band Competition Alright everyone. This is how this is going to work. Please write a piece based on the melody found on the attached Finale 2005 file. If you need the file in a different format, please message me with your e-mail address and how you would like it. Information on the music: Medieval Fantasy was written by my high school band director and used one year for our marching band show. If I need to give you more melody I will, but I really want to see some creativity. I'd love to see a beautiful slow begin, and then a fast Allegro section to end it off! ****Please use at least one key change...unless you don't want to...but easy key changes = bonus points with me. Make it fun!!!! And beautiful!!!! Concert Band Only. You MAY change the title, but at the top you must give credit to Christopher Metcalfe for the main theme. You can and should do some editing to the melody. Make it your own! You are limited to: (You don't have to use every instrument.) James H. Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Could we have the size of the band? Are there a LOT of flutes, a LOT of trumpets, or just like... 4 flutes and 3 trumpets? You list both trumpet and cornet... do you have BOTH instruments available? If so, how many of each? I mean not people playing trumpet and cornet parts, but the instruments themselves. Also, it appears your instrumentation is missing oboes, bassoons, and horns. Is this true? I'd just like to clarify that, because they can be very important instruments, especially the horns without a doubt, and all of them really help with a medieval aura. You list trombone alone, do you include bass trombone? What is the competency of your sections? Are they all strong? Are some strong (clarinets?) and others weak (low brass?)? Which? Knowing all this would really help us to write something that would really work for your band.
Carlly Clabby Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 I, too, am quite confused by the aspects of this competition. I am mainly confused by those same things Enigmus talked about and also the melody in its entirety. Now, I really want to write for this competition, but it's just too confusing. Please elaborate more. Peace, C.L. Winston
James H. Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Oh, and in general, is this a community band? Does it have local professional or competent players, or is it a high school or student ensemble? I'm asking this in the interest of writing proper instrument ranges and considering potentially difficult-to-tune harmonies and key signatures to your ensemble. Another question.... do you have more than one tuba?
piano_player18 Posted September 15, 2008 Author Posted September 15, 2008 Okay! I will make some corrections! Thank you!

They are strong players...the percussion section is a bit weak. The trumpet section is good and everything else is realatively strong. BUT I'M NOT GUARANTEEING ANYTHING. It would probably be only one person if I should him something. But it depends on the submissions.
James H. Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 *reads corrections* .... oh dang, and I just added in a euphonium solo in the beginning too... thanks for the corrections. :veryunsure: EDIT: Oh.... "Euphonium (Both temble and bass clefs please) (1-2)" .... thought that said "both terrible and bass clef please" .... Okay, I'll keep the solo, then. XD So you do have horns? And it would seem you do NOT have cornets and trumpets independently, but only trumpets?
piano_player18 Posted September 15, 2008 Author Posted September 15, 2008 *reads corrections* .... oh dang, and I just added in a euphonium solo in the beginning too... thanks for the corrections. :veryunsure: NOOO! A EUPHONIUM SOLO WOULD BE BEAUTIFUL. As a little secret.... it was a baritone solo at the beginning of the marching band version. hahahahahaha So shall I add you? You can always opt out...but once 10 spots fill...that's it.
James H. Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Really, it was? COOL. I just thought it'd make a lovely lyrical introduction. Yes, I'm taking a whack at this, add me on.
Carlly Clabby Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Thanks for clearing everything up. It kind of sucks there aren't any Bassoons or Oboes. Oh well. I think I'll take a crack at this. Add me on to the list. Peace, C.L. Winston
Mitchell Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 I'm entering. Just don't expect anything great, like last time. XD
piano_player18 Posted September 15, 2008 Author Posted September 15, 2008 Great! Now I need some judges to help me out.
Tokkemon Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 I will judge. I don't have time to write a whole piece but I will be able to aid in judging the pieces.

Mitchell Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 I would judge, but I know nothing about anything so I'm just competing.
Jimmyjuicin Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 question: is it okay if i have some parts doubled up (trumpet 1-2 on the same staff) because i have finale printmusic and i can only have 24 staves total?

That's what one would normally do anyway with a full version. At least, that's how it should be.
