Holding Notes in Sibelius

Featured Replies

Hey,

I just installed Sibelius 4, and I have no idea how to create notes which are held through a bar, such as a bass note with a melody over the top. Any help on how to do this would be most appreciated ASAP.

Thanks,

Gary

Solution: Get Finale 2006.

*Sigh*

Don't listen to pianobeast, he just enjoys bashing sibelius.

Anyways... The solution is quite simple. (If you are doing this on one barline).

To make the bass line, look over to your keypad. On the very bottom there should be five tabs labeled 1, 2, 3, 4 and ALL respectively. Click on 2 and enter the bass line.

Then, to create a melody line you can go back and click the 1 and you can enter it directly over the 2nd voice.

If you want a 3rd or a 4th voice, it's the same thing.

Solution: Get Finale 2006.

The confusion can be greater even in F2006, Pianobeast.

Too bad people who think Finale is hard to use are way stupid. It's very easy to use... And in the rare event that you don't know how to do something, you have 3 options:

1) Computer Help Guide (very in depth)

2) Standard paperback help guide (very in depth)

3) Finale/MakeMusic Technical Support (flawless)

Suck it up, get Finalizzle.

Aren you like a spokesperson for Finale or summit...lol

I know this isn't totally "on topic" but since we have some Sibelius people here....

I tried the Sibelius 3 demo a while back, and since it's a different way of entering notes from Finale, I just couldn't get the hang of it :-(

could someone tell me please, let's say I want to enter a melody, using my piano keyboard, I play it in, then realize that I forgot a note in a run, how do I go back and insert the note? that's been bothering me ever since I used that demo! LOL

just a quicky blurb on how one enters notes in Sibelis using a keyboard controler would be nice. thanks

I use sib 4 now, which inputs differently, but to answer the question in your example:

You would have to select the notes after where the one you missed out should be. Then just cut these, and paste them further along, where they're meant to be, and input the note you wanted.

As for inputting notes,... in Sib 4 anyway, you click the note value (say a crotchet) on the pad, then you move the mouse over the staff where you want the note, and click down. It's that simple.

You can also input with the keyboard, by using the record function, but it's not as good.

I can't remember sib 3, but it doesn't take long to get used to it, or Sib 4.

ok, so in Sibelius, you can't just play note after note, setting the note value from your num pad, while you input the actual notes from your piano keyboard? it really has to be "click assignment"?

I think you can do that. I didn't go over all of the different ways.

Also, I'm no longer familiar with Sib 3.

No, you can play them in from the keyboard - like Finale's simple entry. It's not like speedy where you hold down MIDI keys and press a duration. Instead you press a duration key first and then play the notes in that have that duration.

ah yes! I remember now! this is where I was always getting stuck! LOL

I never could get the hang of putting in rests! silly me!

it was sort of like pressing the Caps Lock+"number" for enterring all notes of the same value in Finale....

Sibelius 4 and Finale 2004-2006 use the 0 key on the number pad (previous versions of Sibelius used the space bar). Basically, it's like entering a note. Whichever duration is selected, when you hit the 0 key, a rest of that duration is entered. Same thing for non-MIDI entry.
