Sequencer for Orchestral music

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm an amateur composer who uses mainly strings or orchestra. I use Sibelius 5 and Kontakt Player 2.

I was wondering if anyone could give advice on a sequencer program that is good for use with orchestral music.

Thanks.

It really depends on your preference/what kind of OS you're running. I currently use Cubase on a PC and I have almost never had a problem with it. Sonar is another one for PC that I've heard about, but I've never used it so I couldn't tell you how well it works. Reputable sequencers for Mac include Logic and Digital Performer, as well as a few others. Really when you get down to it, almost every sequencer does the same thing, just with slightly different packaging. If you're just getting into sequencing, you might want to try downloading Reaper. It's free, and it'll help you get the feel for what sequencing entails before you step up and buy a sequencer.

Cubase or Sonar will be good choice

I use Sonar, it's pretty good, but Cubase or Nuendo is probably better. They have awesome MIDI editors.

I'm using Cubase4 on Windows Vista, and I've done orchestral pieces with it. Works fine! I do agree with Andy though, these days probably any sequencer will give you all you need to edit MIDI and/or Audio. But from what I hear, some applications are geared towards audio editing (e.g. ProTools) while others have strengths in MIDI editing (e.g. Cubase). But they all should cover both anyways.

I started off with Cubase because some of my friends were using it. After I got used to the interface, I kept using it. I haven't used any other major sequencers to be honest, but I'm pretty happy with Cubase.

Hope my 2 cents are somewhat useful!

Cheers!

protools8 now has an integration with sibelius. (actually a stripped version of sibelius is now built in protools.)

that makes it the first DAW to be directly compatible with a notation software.

but to be honest, if you wish to sequence your piece you will end up using a piano roll because its a different approach
