CANTINA BAND!

hahaha

i think cantina band is probably the most single known non-pop piece of music in the world, or at least America.

Anyway, my favorite is Mars, which for some reason i can see some backlash coming from Just Tokke about my liking of Mars, but I do like it's powerful-ness and how towards the end Holst repeats that chord 17 (yes, i counted) times and yet each time instead of getting old it just builds more tension. I don't really like jupiter, it sounds a little... gay, as in, the happy kind. And i'm usually not in to mood to hear a happy gay piece like that.

I can't say i've ever heard uranus, i think i've only heard venus jupiter and mars but I have all of them

also, not to ruin a bad joke but technically speaking "Uranus" is not pronounced Your and Anus with a long A sound, dictionaries (as well as astronomers and NASA's website) say Your-Uh-Nus, with a short A sound :D

 Why? I love Mars. It's my 2nd fav. out of the whole piece. (Jupiter is 1st, Uranus is 3rd).

Holst IS really bombastic. He's all balls, no heart + brain. He has his intellectual moments though (Hammersmith)

Holst is awesome. I can't understand why one would think otherwise.

My favorites are Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, oh and I guess Mars.

Saturn really has an uncanny and magestic feel to it, probably something I'd end up stealing for parts of one of my suites. Jupiter reminds me a lot of a Earth's giant mirror, because of its liveliness.

I would probably have to go with Jupiter for my favorite of all the planets. Nothing beats the lush, lyrical section in the middle, gives me chills everytime I listen (which wouldn't be a bad idea right about now... iTunes!

Of course Mars is also one of my faves as well. As simple as the main motif is, its friggin brillant. Haha I picked the most over played Planets there are but in my opinion, they are the best!

I mainly like Jupiter for the space sounds, the God Jupiter playing with the alien creatures and exploration of the black air seeping through the atmosphere. Remember it has many moons. It's meant for more than the physical, the only one with ongoing life, the bold brass and fluttering woodwind arpeggios, diminished 7th and augmented harmonies all using the sixth of the scales, and after that, the dancing melody of horn and strings. Very impressionistic, especially the birhythmic descants and bold drawn-out woodwind arpeggios. The most evocative of the pieces at times. It's hard to beat the last 3/7s of that piece, after the boring part in the middle.
