Thomas Newman's work

Featured Replies

I really like some of his themes. His ability to combine electronic effects with orchestra is seamless. Atmospheric beauty.

I was going to post some links but I just read the sticky.

I especially like his work on the Shawshank Redemption. Although he does seem to rip some stuff from The Planets.

Anyway, haven't heard much about him on this forum. Check him out if you haven't yet.

I really like the American Beauty score, especially it's instrumentation. I don't think I've heard anything else by him. Does he do much with unusual non-orchestral instrumentation?

Yes, listen to Wall-E and if you can get it Angels in America which is an absolutely amazing score, I believe the main titles are on youtube...

Check out Jarhead's score, Newman complements his usual box of tricks with some hard rock elements. It's a really interesting mash-up.

It always perplexes me why scores like Cinderella Man, Road to Perdition, Finding Nemo, etc. are not more talked about and referenced more than they are. I love Thomas Newman. I am with you guys on this one. But I think that Cinderella Man is maybe one of his best scores. I love Road to Perdition as well. All of this is beautifully haunting music. There is a lushness to it and emotional pull that ight moverwhelm you. It invites you into a new world. And surprisingly Findly Nemo is fantastic score. The cues are a bit short sometimes, but they are wonderful cues anyway. There are some very cute segments and some amazingly tender and touching parts too. Nemo's Egg is delicate and beautiful. Yet, I don't hear anyone praising these ever. I hear stuff about Shawshank and American Beauty. I do like the American Beauty score, but I would say that Cinderella Man and Road to Perdition I like even more.

well, maybe because people remember better films - american beauty is certainly better than cinderella man, at least according to critics.

score for revolutionary road is good as well. very clinical going off only when dicaprio's hero runs after winslet's hero dies.

The Good German kicks all of your favorite Newman scores' asses.

WALL-E is one of my favorite movie scores in recent memory. Brilliant stuff.

"Define Dancing" from Wall-E was pure beauty.

I love, and I mean REALLY LOVE!!! the Axiom landing music... all those wonderfully crunchy brass chords. It's a shame it's so short!

We watched Wall-E again this week (3rd time since buying the DVD), and dammit, every time we see it, there's something brilliant we hadn't noticed, or some detail we already knew that takes on a completely new significance.

I can understand why so many critics placed this film in their "top 10" lists.

I hope the score will be nominated for an Oscar (not that the Oscars mean anything anymore). It certainly deserves it.

I totally agree! When I heard the landing music in the theater I got chills.

Oooh, and we can't forget Meet Joe Black or Little Women (classics.)

FOREIGN CONTAMINANT.

*sings jaunty little guitar lines*
