Orchestral Sketch

This is my first post on YC forum. This is one of 4 orchestral sketches (for lack of a better name). All four are connected via their motivic material.

At any rate, I would sincerely appreciate feedback on this piece in whatever terms strike you.

just a suggestion: when you post a score, please, don't forget to remove the "display in concert pitch" option.

and preferably, optimize your score a bit to remove all those empty staves.

...and, even if you choose to display a concert score:

1.) you must clearly mark it as a "C Score"

2.) all instruments with octave transpositions (Piccolo, Contrabassoon, Double Bass, etc.) should still be displayed "transposed".

Duly noted and thanks for the suggestions. I should have mentioned the score is still a mess. Some of the instruments are placeholders while I was orchestrating and don't play a single note. So it's now a transposed score and optimized albeit a little haphazzardly until I can really 'engrave' it.

Definitely interesting, I would watch you're orchestration just a little bit in places where doubling could be overpowering though, although its hard to say how some of it would sound, a good rule of thumb is two loud trumpets against strings, trumpets when and you've got a section with all three against strings along with trombone.

Michael - thank you for your comments on development. This is probably my biggest struggle and a topic of continued study.

dark-ice - thanks for the listen and positive feedback.

jimmiew - I'll take a look at the balance again. Technology is great to get an idea of what you're piece will sound like, but it still requires a degree of imagination IMO. And if you add to that the experience of playing in an orchestra, so much the better.

Hey steve, thanks for posting. here are my comments!)

1) I definitely feel the Scherzo. it is appropriately titled.

2) Measures 14-18 went too quick for me. IT'S GREAT WHAT YOU HAVE THERE!! more

of that. You could expand that even more. I kept repeating that part over and over.

Then you have the lush section (and boy do I love lush) and you could push that even more. Lastly, you give the clarinet that beautiful solo.....expand that. With those two fragments you could make this piece even longer.

3) I love the syncopations you have, maybe some more call and responses syncos? Or a linear line over it? Just a thought.

4) fix those double sharps! (Finale is evil with that!)

Steve, it looks much better now. I would encourage you to go through the score carefully and correct some of the enharmonic misspellings that resulted in some double flats, etc.

I can't listen at work but I'll try to listen later tonight or tomorrow and give some additional feedback.

There's nothing wrong with individual staves for like instruments, particularly if they result in better visual clarity. I'd rather have more staves than a cramped, ugly shared staff.
