"Christ the Lord is Risen Today" Variations

Featured Replies

In honor of Easter (finished only 24 minutes late!), I wrote this short Theme and Variations on the classic Easter Hymn "Christ the Lord is Risen Today." Each movement has a certain character about it: Theme is pretty traditional, Var. I is fanciful off-beat mania, Var. II is the toccata for the hands, Var. II is a dense cluster grave, almost Bart

VERY nice! I like it. It's a neat score and its done well.

BRAVA! HE IS RISEN IN MY HEART AND HE LIVES!

This was truly a pleasure to hear. I couldn't help but smile when I heard this piece. The best theme and variation I've heard so far on this forum (However, I am a new member and I've only heard a few). Great job, now go out and make more variations off a different equally familiar theme.

couple of engraving problems, and the piano writing isn't the most interesting. the fugue has a few parallels and things, and some intervals that are a bit awkward and don't quite sit well in the hand. (it also breaks from 4-voice too soon with a few chords here and there. it's ok in romantic writing to do so, but generally, not returning to the relatively strict 4-part writing immediately afterward. BTW, most pianists will dislike you for those "pinky" trills)

I agree with that, is not that they are absolutely wrong, the thing is most pianist have always run away from those trills and fingers are not used to do that ... only pianists with frequent modern works on their schedule won't find them rigid.

That is a very popular song these days. You should do Amora, too OKAY!

I'm not sure I like each variation being so self-contained... that each follows a distinct rhythmic pattern that doesn't break (mostly in Var. Ii and III). It can be very difficult for those who do not possess very refined technique at the piano to write idomatically or write specifically for the instrument... your third variation seems to be evidence of this. The constant stream of sixteenth notes isn't very rewarding when they are just parallel sixths all over the keyboard.

I love this song, and I enjoyed listening to these variations very much. My favorite was the last one, I think I may even like it more than the original!

i've listened to this piece twice now and I have to say that its very well done. the only suggestion i have is to connect the variations, other wise it becomes a little to stop and start-ish for my tastes. especially with the first couple of variations. I must say however, that the final variation is superb, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

congrats.
