Mad Doktor's Leitmotif

Featured Replies

Hi,

This is a short piece for solo piano, I tried to have fun and meant for it to be a bit sinister and fun at the same time.

Any comments are welcome.

Edit: Edited score for some mistakes, collisions, etc.

I'm just going to repeat the comment that I seem to now make on everyone's piece.

CLEAN UP YOUR SCORE.

You have collisions, you're missing brackets and a double barline, and you shouldn't mark which staff goes to which hand like that. If you really want the hands crossed like that the whole time (unless that was a typo), put your top line on the bottom and the bottom line on the top.

Hi charliep123. The bar line marking was a typo, but I'm glad you caught that and some other things (that I didn't notice). That's one of the things I seriously need to work on and pointing out mistakes helps.

I have made some edits to my score and the updated version is here: 4shared.com - document sharing - download leitmofit_wip3.pdf

KSP,

Its lookin' better, but there are still collisions (mostly accidentals too close to noteheads). Also spacing issues. Space it so that you have 4 bars on each system. Your measures are all the same size with repeated eight notes in the left hand, but sometimes there are 5 bars on a system, sometimes three. It makes it very weird to look at and hard to read. Keep all of your measures the same size (unless, of course, you have a meter change ;)).

Also, bar 19 your missing a dot on the eighth rest. Get rid of that extra measure at the end and put in a real double bar line.

Also, no dynamics, phrase markings, articulations? Do you really want it played without any of that?

Therre arre nooo missstakes!!!!!! By the way, who is this demented individual? Furthermore, consonance & dissonance are both two sides of the same coin!

Adorable. Just adorable! Although I see it less as the theme of the scientist's himself, and more like his devouted assistant Igor, if you know what I mean... :shifty:

Good Job!!!

First thank you all for you comments!

Dahniel, Myrtle: Glad you liked it. :) The demented "Doktor" is Doctor Strangelove, the doctor who fantasizes about destoying humanity with atomic bombs. It's the main character from a cold-war era movie by the same title. I was torn between Dr. Frankenstien and Dr. Strangelove, but Stangelove won due to his sinister (and seriously demented) ways.

charliep123: I've posted an updated score for anyone who's interested. Also thanks for helping me clean up my score; from your advice I noticed some notation errors on the 8th rest in measures 11, and other measures also. I think it looks better, and someone would be more inclined to play it. Couldn't quite figure out though how to space the accidentals further away from the notes; but I think I can play around with OpenXML.

KSP,

This is lookin' a lot better!

On page two your barlines aren't attached to the staves. Try and keep all of your measures the same size. If you shrink the staves a bit, it'll look a bit nicer too, not quite as bulk. Plus it'll space things out a bit more.

The tie in measure 8 should go up, unless its supposed to be on the bottom note in which case it needs to be attached to the correct note. Also, just slightly more space between systems would be good.

All of those eightnotes need to be evenly spaced as well.

But its definitely a huge improvement.

Wow KSP.. long time no see :P. I'll comment on your piece later.. it sounds pretty cool. haha

Thanks charliep123!

I played around with the settings and was able to get the notes more evenly spaced. It indeed does look better. Shrinking the spacing between staves also helped attach the barlines to the end of the second page. I've now learned how to use my notation programs better, and go into advanced options; something I think will help in the future.

Hi Romanticist, It's nice to see you also. Just came back after a long break.

KSP,

Now you're gettin' a good lookin' score!

I would still like it if some of the eights in a couple of measures were more evenly spaced and if you left more space between both the left and right hand staffs and between systems. Also, that tie in measure 8 is still positioned oddly.

And yeah, see what you can do about nudging those accidentals over slightly. And about spacing the last to measures the same as the rest (this would mean your double barline would be somewhere near the center of the page).

But this has definitely gone from looking like you don't know what you're doing to a good lookin' score. Notation and score-making is just as important as the actual composition (if not more so), and I'm quite happy to see this major improvement in the look of your score.

Looks interesting. But I don't like KSP. Why not use your full name?

I love it. I'm picturing a doctor working on a (seemingly) impossible task, such as curing himself/loved one/etc. of a grave condition, and going mad in the process.

Thanks for reviewing, Charlie, Andrew, Peter!

Peter: My score now has my name. It would be strange for a composer not to sign their works (unless using a pseudononym).

Andrew: It's nice to hear a different spin on what the song means. The song was meant to convey some madness but I didn't think to that picture before.

Charlie: I've finally found out how to use invisible measures (my notation program *really* isn't obvious). And I found a way to nudge over the accidentals; it was painful but worth it (had to open up an object inspector window for each acciental/regret making so many accidentals). Looks like though some note spacing cannot be helped unless I change programs. I like the way the score looks much better.

See how much better that looks!?

I am going restate the whole "space the systems further apart (and evenly)" thing, but other than that, this is a HUGE improvement. Its looking really good.

  • 2 weeks later...

if you think all systems should be spaced so, maybe you should talk to peters, or barenreiter, or b&haertel...
