2mins tone poem ish thing

Featured Replies

Hi, I've written two minutes of a tone-poem like orchestra thing and I'm looking for advice just generally on composing (and orchestrating) based on what I have here: (It ends on measure 63....there's other stuff after some silence after that that I have no idea how it got there).

One of the things I'm confused about is going from a dominant chord to (deceptively) a diminished chord of some kind and from that point introducing a melody of extremely different character from the one that led to the dominant chord. Is this too sudden the way I do it in this music, such as at measure 48 and measure 33? Also, is it bad to have started the new melody on that same half diminished chord that was deceptively resolved to a measure earlier? Does it feel like there is no continuity the way I used the deceptive resolution?

Also, here's the score:

I got that it was 5 mins with a huge rest :P

Ah, well... all the same good job. I like the color and the sounds you use.

Enjoy composing!

Very nice job. I can just hear this with a real orchestra, because it's something I'd WANT to hear from a real orchestra. It sounds like a cue from a 50's or 60's soundtrack in places. However, the long rest is awkward, and the score is kind of messy.

oh no, the rest begins (at 2:05) where I finished thus far and the stuff that comes after that long rest is just a bunch of things I accidentally copy and pasted together...but it does sound unusually good for a random accident, it sounds almost like R. Strauss.

But thanks anyway, appreciate people taking the time to comment

I just saw your score becuase I've no speakers right now in this PC....

You have no Violins II ..... only "Violins" ?

I would strongly recommend to use 2 violins sections, I see you're already writing for 2 sections just use 2 staves.

and other details (no big deal) .....

the bars like the frist on page 3 viola part .... looks ugly, ... if you're using sibelius you select the notes and click X to flip (it is said "flip" ?)

Put the strings section below any other thing .... (your timpani and Harp are below)....i've been seeing this very often .... does not all notation software sort the instruments actumatically ?

You have 4 bassoons ? .... you can specify when play all or just one .... with "II,III a 2" or just "a 2" "a 4"

bar 1 in page 9, change the clef for the horn .... you have to count the lines to know what note is that.

Seems like you like the ffff .... just don't put that on the trombones/tuba for very long time .... or they simply won't do it.

I'll come back to listen you piece :)

thanks for the detailed advice...i didn't mean to have 4 bassoons actually, but now i realize where that happened....i think finale does automatically organize the instruments for you, and i'm not aware of a violin split option for staves. i also am not aware of a flip option on finale but I know what you mean about the viola part...

as far as the ffff...i wouldn't put that in the revised score, i just used it so i could hear certain parts better on finale, i'm not sure the volume of every instrument is representative or not.

ou I see (the ffff) .... but does Finale actually plays louder if you write ffff ?

3 fs are loudest in Sibelius (I think) ....

the 2 violins, ... maybe you just have to ask 2 violins staves ..... and the order is very easy ...

Woodwinds

Brass

Percussion

Strings

nothing below the contrabasses ....

If you upload an mp3 file the recording can be heard in the built-in player of the page without clicking "download" .... (yours is m4a)

I heard it this time....

It doesn't sound so "beginner" within the sytle your working on .... after you create some pieces like this one you perhaps may want to continue with something more complex, but is very good to start ....
