September 1, 200917 yr Our Way This piece was a commission from my former high school, the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Queens, NY. They have just recently opened their new building and this piece was commissioned for the building inauguration happening in December. It has several hidden quotes to Frank Sinatra songs including "Come Fly With Me" and "My Way". It is scored for the schools orchestra, which is essentially a modified version of an expanded "jazz orchestra", if you will, with an additional full sax section and rhythm. Our Way will be performed on their Winter Concert in December (I don't have the exact date on hand, but I believe its in the first week or so,) where I'll be conducting it. Anyone in the New York area is welcome to attend. If you want to come, drop me a line and I'll inquire about getting you a free ticket. You can find both the score and recording on my website: Justin Tokke - Our Way Comments welcome!
September 1, 200917 yr Sorry, I don't have time to listen to it all, or to give a detailed comment. I just wanted to post saying that once again your melodies are fantastic! I especially liked parts where the brass/saxes had one part and the violins/high woodwinds had another and they went together. I didn't like the playback. Instruments sounded bad and fast notes were a jumble.
September 2, 200917 yr Great piece Justin! Very fun to listen to :) If I happen to be in the NY area in December, I would love to listen to this live! Will you be able to get a recording of the show?
September 2, 200917 yr Well, it's clear you know you're doing better than I do, but I'll just say that my favourite parts were the exciting bits like the beginning, even though the whole thing was very, very good. Excellent job! I want to hear a live recording.
September 4, 200917 yr The score looks great and the midi sounds like it would translate to a real ensemble well, but personally I don't think it breaks any new ground or is 'that' fantastic. I am a big fan of upper woodwind flourishes and runs, and the ones you have written are very nice. Good job.
September 4, 200917 yr Author The music that is, not the midi :P It's not a MIDI. Thanks for your comments everyone!
