best hammer action MIDI keyboard

Featured Replies

Hello everyone I am new here. I just wanted to ask for advice, I tried searching for this topic, but no luck.

Currently I own M-audio oxygen 49 but it feels too cheap and plasticky, so I want to buy something that feels like real piano with 7 octaves. Something minimal and small in design like ProKeys 88sx, but if possible with controller knobs for additional control. Its really hard for me to express myself on this keyboard, it feels as if its gonna break if I play any harder, so I want something sturdy with really heavy keys.

Any recommendations?

I have been considering studiologic numa black but I cannot find a dealer near me.

Do not buy M-Audio keyboards, their action sucks.

Do not buy Studiologic keyboards, their build quality is terrible.

I'm looking to buy a hammer action MIDI controller in the $1000 (cheap) range and I'm interested in the AKAI MPK88 when it comes out. The Yamaha M88 is good but you're also paying for a lot of sounds since it's an actual synth.

I have also been looking at Akai mpk88. The problem is that I don't need any additional options which are provided with synth, I only need Midi keyboard as I mostly use sound libraries of EWQL and similar brands. If I need a synth I can also use vast amounts of VSTs or plug in some of my hardware synths. I don't want to pay for anything more than hammer weighted MIDI, and it has to look nice and small. I tried googling it but it seems there aren't many options to choose from.

PS- M audio didn't develop tactile feel for their keyboards, which is really bad for someone interested in dynamics of orchestral music, I guess it could be ok for electronic musicians. It was ok to use with emulator of arp 2600, because it has about dozen knobs.

I use a Yamaha p60, 88 fully weighted keys. I use it for my composition all the time. It's a wonderful keyboard, and not too expensive. The sounds are poor and limited, and the speakers are awful, but if you are like me and use sound libraries and your own speakers, it doesn't make a difference. The action is what really matters, and it has great hammer action.

That one looks promising, but I still can't find distribution in my area, I will have to find a way.
