My first piano piece

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am new to the forum and i have a piano piece i would like to share with you all.

Originally I startedcomposing for classical guitar last year, and then recently i moved onto piano.

So i have a lot of influnce from many classical guitar composers as well as many piano composers.

This piece was originally just going to be a waltz, but i had to many ideas to fit into the style of a waltz and after hearing many of Chopin's ballades i thought it might fit that form, allthough i didn't comepletely follow it.

I honestly only composed what i really like, I've had mixed reviews from other people.

They either completely hate it or completely love it.

Anyway please just listen to it, I'm here to hopefully learn so feel free to criticize my piece and all.

Also i'm just wondering what style you would call it as far as Classical, Romantic and all those.

I am not sure what era it would fit in the Classical,

but its finely constructed.

Good work.

Thankyou very much,

And i realize also mine is no where near as grand as Chopin's.

And learn you shall, as long as I am here.

Well, mostly I yell at you, but don't ever take anything I say as offensive. Unless I say so.

FIRST. I CALL IT MODERN. No, I call it nothing, and leave the indexing for the frustrated librarian who has to sort through all your amazing works in the future.

Okay, about the Chopin thing. Too many people want to emulate his style, and I'm tired of it. I absolutely LOVE the first one, in g minor, but I just don't get exactly how it WORKS, and would never try to follow something that great.

If you have too many ideas, great. You're already a magnificent composer, and you don't need to impress anyone. I hear the melody here loud and clear, and it's great. You don't need to fit any mold of Waltz or Mazurka form or whatnot; just call it Piano Piece No.1 and leave it at that.

People hate in general. So when you say people hate it or love it, the people that hate it really just don't think your piece was as monumentally virtuosic as La Campanella or whatever. Trust me on this. AND IT DOESN'T NEED TO BE, THAT'S THE GREAT PART ABOUT MUSIC. :D

You've made something. It will possibly be played in some little girl's recital, or maybe by the protégés of Juillliard, you have no idea. But you have to keep going, so promise me that. I am totally at a loss without sheet music to look at, so that is why I am talking about you.

And i realize also mine is no where near as grand as Chopin's.[/b]

NO

NO

NO

AND

NO

As soon as I finish my post you say this. NO! No one's will ever be as grand as Chopin's! No one's will ever sound as terrible as Ginastera's! No one's will ever be as rambunctious or accepted as Rach's!

Be yourself. Really. I am sick and tired of the WORD 'like,' and I've like only been like lurking for like five minutes. Because too many people expect your works to be like someone's. This needs to stop, and hopefully I can change this before I get banned.

Very true.

It should be what ever i feel right?

But at the same time i want someone else to have the same feelings i have when i hear it, i guess that's not something i can judge though.

I agree with you though, you've provided me some "deep" insights.

Thank you very much for your comments.

Maybe one day i'll be able to make something at least remotely as beautiful as the g minor ballade.

And i promise i will continue.

I love you. I've been trying to get this message across for the longest time, perhaps now it will manage to be heard.

Nice piece Meta, no time for a review at the moment though, I'll see about leaving one later ;)

If only Midi didn't muddy those low, low bass notes...

This is so so much better than the first version you had that basically repeated the theme a million times in the exact same way... This one you really take the ideas and run with them and you've come out with a piece that's definitely pretty good.

the first versions were just me trying to get all my ideas straight, it wasn't until i decided to get out of the waltz mold that it started un-wrapping into the piece of music it is now.

THankyou nico,

I never said it sounded like chopin, just that i loved his ballades and thought it might fit that form/style] and I agree it does kind of lack some contrast.

haha cool so am i.

  • Author

I have one more question, do you think it would fit Inpromtu better?

Thank you very much,

And I realize also mine is no where near as grand as Chopin's.

I would agree with the others, don't compare yourself with Chopin. (I am not a huge fan of Chopin I may like this better than some of his works)

The work is good, and yeah, be yourself and make your own voice, even if it is similiar to anothers.

Hey,

I've got a slightly updated version,

http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/5/30/43022/Waltz1.mp3

and yes i have decided to go with the name of Waltz.

=\ bleh.

anyway, i converted the midi to mp3 so it sounds ALOT better now.

For your first piano piece that is pretty DARN good.

I thought it captured the essence of a waltz in every way EXCEPT...

it was too slow. Waltzes in my experience have always been fasteer than that.

Just my experience... (BTW- I haven't heard any slow waltzes...)

try "Valse Triste" by Sibelius :)

Always correcting me... :)

Always correcting me... :)

actually, it was more of a recommendation. I think Valse Triste is an amazing work. if you dig it, try Sibelius' final symphony - the magnificent 7th in C major (and don't let that title fool you. this is a thoroughly modern symphony). It's an amazing piece in one lengthy movement. Sibelius is one of those composers that people need to be TOLD to listen to, they just don't happen on his music by themselves. He's probably the greatest symphonist of the 20th century. And so sadly misunderstood and mis-labeled as a "romantic".

Thanks, is there anyway I could listen to it without having to pay for it. I am a little low on cash...

lol try some stuff by Johanne strauss, the Chopin waltzes of course tend to be fast, But the original waltzes from the dance form were moderate slower speeds for dancing.

I agree with most of the people here, I find this piece a Waltz, the bass chords that mark the three tact(dunno what it is called in english, since I learn music in swedish

)

And I don't really agree with Nico about the contrast thing, I think it is fine as it is, since I like it flowing nicely, don't really want anything to change the nice flow. I kinda feel some kinda of warm summer wind caresing my cheek :)

A very nice and special atmosphere you have given this piece. It feels as though it is happy but there is somthing bothering it, if you understand

Oh, and thank you kindly for the comments.

no problem :)

Hi,

i like this peace very much and if this is your first work really nice.

The variations and modulations are fine and it has an atmosphere but the main theme is only 5 notes. With your knowledge i am shure that you can do much more. Its ok to variate a theme and only one theme can stabilaze the complete peace but the theme must be stronger then. In my opinion a theme is allways like the story it tells if so short then the story is like kind (hey the trees are green!) but it should say more like (hey the trees are big, beautifull and green. They give shadows to people, loving each other and in winter their lack of leaves promise you the summer and better days). I hope i could explain you what i mean. And with your knowledge i am shure you can do this.

Wow, I actually understood that.

Makes alot of since... oh and it's 6 notes =p you forgot the G.

I understand what you mean.

A few other people have told me it has an under developed theme so i guess i should take a hint.
