Freedom

This is meant to be a sort of "Second Movement" to my "Empty Memories" piece. It starts off with lone strings, then builds to an "opening of the heavens" so to speak. Thoughts and comments appreciated. Thank you =)

Freedom

Serge

I was wondering what the surprise was supposed to be. Then I figured out that the surprise was that the piece is actually a Quintet. Well of course that didn't last long...Surprise!

The piano part really sets off the piece. Nice.

I hope you understand about the multiple posts. I know that you want everyone to hear your music, but posting a number of them like that does just the opposite of what you really want. Give some time between the uploads and you will get many more responses.

Nice piece

Thank you, and I do understand that about the posts: I'll be more conservative in the future :)

Piece sounds very good. Would love to see a score though - in order to give it a much more thorough review.

I would love to, but that may take a while: I actually created this with Sibelius on a different computer, then burned in on a cd, ripped it to my one that has an internet connection, and posted it here! My family uses this one all the time, since it has the internet, among other things, so I have to use a different computer to make music. Thank you for the comment, and as soon as I can I'll get a pdf of it :)

Well, I'd really like to see your scores on the next few pieces you post. We can give you reviews on your works based on the audio BUT a score would enable us to better analyze and comment on the overall structural, harmonic, an orchestrational aspects of your works. Make sense?

  • Author

Yes, it does, and I'll try my best to do so.

Serge:

I think you have a nice idea in here..but like with many pieces, it needs a chord progression change, not the same 4 chords over and over...that's my personal taste.

I think that a score would really help in the review, as I don't know what one of the sounds was (it sounded like a flute sorta, but I don't know)

The piano is a nice touch, as is the chorus. I, like Ron, think a more descriptive post then just String quartet surprise and then the link would be nice. Like, what is the piece about? Why did you choose the name freedom? Is there anything else interesting we should know?

I also think the piece ends to suddenly. A held note might be nice. Also, the texture is very much the same, in drones with a fast accompaniment. I would like, perhaps a change. Like a fast melody with droning accompaniment?

Thanks, and good luck on composing more! (P.S you might want to change your user title from 2 month composer ;))

Thank you for the suggestions, Heckel! I'll see what I can do ;)

I like it Serge,

As for a score you could use a memory stick for data transfere for computer to computer.. it will save you time.

I also use "cute pdf" on "finale printmusic", its a free program and you go to print your document as normal then select "pdf" insted of which printer to use.

I hope this makes sense ... I have another xmas hangover today..! :santa:

Very pretty writing Serge..You seem to have pretty good sensitivity with your slower works and use good restraint in holding back with using each instrument. I agree that perhaps it could use a little harmonic variety but as is it is very simplistic and pretty.

  • Author

By a little more harmonic variety, do you meant that I should add another instrument, or have a certain instrument do more?

Thanks very much for commenting and for the suggestion! :)

Well this piece is very effective! It does paint of picture of freedom. I would like to know if you actually play viola. The reason for this being at measure 19, the viola does not go that low (I'm talking about the 3rd viola part). Violas go as low as a 3rd above the note you put there. I'm also not sure about the idea of 4-5 note chords, seeing as no one viola can play all at once. It also seems to add unnecessary volume.

As you've probably guessed, no, I don't play the viola  I had no idea a viola couldn't go that low. Can the violincello go that far down? I'll simply substitute them if that's the case.

About the 4-5 note chords: the idea of the piece is actually much bigger than the score suggests (which is why I can no longer call this a String Quartet Surprise). This piece would have a much bigger collection of violins in order to produce the volume necessary to create the desired sound if played in real life. I would have done so on Sibelius, but my computer can only take so many instruments going on at once

Thanks for commenting, much appreciated! :D

Wow. That is what I felt compelled to write when the piano part came in. The running almost "sparkling" melody really does evoke a feeling of freedom. The piece really opens up from that point and I actually found it quite moving. The only real critique I have to offer is that I feel it ends a bit abruptly. I think it would be effective if you brought it back down to that kind of introspective feeling you had at the beginning and end the last note with a longer sustain. That just what I hear though.

Lovely piece. I enjoyed it.

Thank you very much! :) The "sparkling" is exactly what I had in mind, I'm pleased you used that word! And I also agree with the ending being abrupt and how it should have at the very least a sustained note, I just haven't gotten around to it. Despite the fact I've written this piece months ago  I move veeerryyy slowly.

Thanks for your feedback, it is very much appreciated! :D
