Ete Indien

Featured Replies

This is a work for a challenge i lost.

For Piano and Violin, signature is 11/8, which is funny, but i tried to put colors in the work. Influence are obviously Ravel, Debussy, Chopin. It is ABA' form.

I hope you will enjoy it as much as I wrote it.

Ete Indien

hmm.. this is really gorgeous. real mellow and soothing towards the beginning, with violent outbursts. i think the 11/8 adds a lot to it, it prevents it from falling into a predictable, "foot tappable" rhythm. you can't forsee too well whats ahead, i like that.shouts debussy to me!

beautiful looking score too. youre real specific about what you want in it.

may it be that you overuse the broken chords? the piano accompaniment has a tendancy to fall into a groove and stay there for prolonged periods of time. consider revising.

very cool indeed. you should be proud! im putting it on mu ipod! :)

Very beautiful work. Simple - yet elegant. I like it.

I like this. Love the 11/8. Some of the motives sound like motives from the Debussy's stringquartet. Have you been listening?

Some notational issues: notes and slurs are sometimes aligned as if there is a second layer below, but when the violin is so high, you need to put the lines downward...

Can you tell me more about this work, why is it Indian?

nice, keep up :)

So absolutely wonderful. The 11/8 is not awkward at all, you make the time signature really work. This reminds me sooo much of Ravel's violin sonatas (which are just incredible as I'm sure you agree, in fact, there is a motive right out of Sonata Posthume to me) and I liked your harmonies. I would like to see a little more rhythmic variation in the piano though leading up to the climax, but I really like how you changed it up. Good synthesis of early 20th century French music (my personal favorite) but yet with a contemporary personal touch.

Share a recording if you get a performance! I love this piece!

Thanks a lot you all for these comments.

sabiansoldier: yep I am already considering revising the work, but since i finished it last October, I would like to wait a bit to have a fresh look at it. Indeed you pointed out the broken cords. I think it can be possible to play more on the odd rythm (3+3+3+2) stressing it without overloading. glqd it hit your ipod.

jrcramer: "Ete Indien" is French and means "Indian Summer" as the famous one you can see in Canada at the beginning of fall. I tried to render the colorfullness of the the nature as well as the chill for the coming winter.

jcharney: Indeed I do love Ravel. The middle melody shares some of the one of the string quartet of Ravel. But to tell the truth, I did realise it long after. And then I thought that my work still adds something sensible to keep as it is. Don't have yet a performance, but if you have somebody interested in playing it, please let me know...

Wow! Fantastic! I really like this!

I would really like to see what won the competition, if this is what that piece was up against :D

The contrasts presented here are so interesting and unpredictable: it adds a unique liveliness to the piece.

The only thing is, I'm not sure if the piece can really be construed as..."chilly". Colorful, definitely, as it is very vibrant, but I really don't get the upcoming chill part (unless the chill is represented by the gold notes on the score that cause that strange melody to play for a small while, in which case it does make sense to me).

Anyways, thanks very much for uploading, and this is going under my favorites! :)
