Brass Quartet Prelude

lol, voted for myself accidentally, shouldn't you not be allowed to rate it yourself :P

Edit: ok, so I didn't know when you upload a piece, it makes a thread...this new site is wickedly awesome.

Yes, wickedly AWESOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMME!

This is a really nice prelude! It makes a great stage, for a main body to come and "complete" the piece: I like the merging of the various brass instruments, and how they make a thick, kind of purposefully murky atmosphere.

Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed this ;)

Very good work, Dirk. I really enjoyed this. The harmony is very interesting and makes me want to listen to this more.

First off, I agree that the new site is really cool...This is a nice performance of your work here. I like that you aren't afraid to explore some interesting harmonies. The darkness present reminds me of a piece that I wrote a while back. Would be really cool accompanied by some kind of spooky video..

Oh damn :pinch:

Should be fixed now.

http://www.youngcomposers.com/profile/music/Dirk%20Gently/composition?entry=25707 is where you should go :P

I could help the guys in your recording. ;P

Any particular reason this piece was written in this format? IE quartet vs quintet? And two C trumpets? I ask because having a true bass (tuba) in this could really fill out the sonorities. There are moments of utter brilliance where the voicings are perfectly spaced and blended. And there are others with large gaps in the voicing that a bass would help with, mainly because French horn is an alto voice whereas in this piece it's functioning as the tenor. Incidentally, t-bone is tenor and here it's functioning as baritone. And there is more color to a tuba low C than a trombone low C.

m.52: unison E. ;D Tpt 2 effectively disappeared.

Very nice! Flow is good, the writing is pretty brass-friendly, you remembered the whole "wind players breathe" thing, there's some good room for expression. You could stand to do more with articulation markings to help out with variety in attacks. It was pretty monotone in that area.

Thanks for sharing and bumping.

Thank you for listening and commenting, I really appreciate it :D

I wrote it for a quartet because this piece was commissioned for a quartet, one with 2 C trumpets :P.

I've been thinking about revising this for a quintet and adding some movements to it. If I do I will certainly take your suggestions into consideration. Thanks again for listening
