January 18, 201016 yr This is my first venture outside of concert band literature. I was sitting around the other day and just wanted to write. I didn't want any limitations by what instruments to write for, what length it had to be. I just wrote, and this is the end effect. It pretty much depicts the day I had, a rainy day with me looking back on different memories. Reminiscence
January 19, 201016 yr This is pretty good for your first time out of concert band writing. My favorite instrument combination outside of standard orchestral/band repertoire is the flute and guitar. My only issue with the piece is your guitar (I assume that's what you're going for) is too high in the register. Drop the whole part an octave and see if you like that any better. Good work! :) -AA
January 19, 201016 yr Nice work. My only complaint is that it feels rigid with the guitar predictably plucking out a sonority every beat. Predictability is not necessarily a bad thing but, as you write more, you may want to challenge yourself by figuring out ways to make your works more fluid.
January 20, 201016 yr Hey!! I like the harmonies and melodies used! It's just a shame there guitar isn't a bit more sensitive, but it's cool, it can' be helped.
January 21, 201016 yr This is a nice little piece for your first venture out of your comfort zone. I do agree with all that is written above, but all of that will come in time. Ron
January 21, 201016 yr It really does have a rainy feel to it: the harmonies and reverb and melody all really evoke that feeling. But the reminisce part: not so much! If you want to evoke that feeling, add some well-placed pauses in your piece: that way, it is as though your mind is meditating on things in the past, and is frozen in that time... Good writing overall, though: thanks for sharing!
January 22, 201016 yr Hey there! Sorry to be the voice of negativity here but I found it quite pedantic and uninspired. When you introduced it as you finally breaking free of your usual mould and just wanting to write without any limitations, I was expecting something a bit more heartfelt, complex, and perhaps even grandiose. This...well, to my ears it's kind of like a poor pastiche of a bad town theme in an old no-name Gameboy RPG. That being said, I can attribute this to you not being used to this kind of free writing and therefore playing it safe. I hope that you take this and keep going in this direction: break free of whatever limitations you felt you were under and keep exploring what you truly have to say to the world in musical terms. Don't be afraid of a little adventure and complexity. :) Nice experiment, now just keep at it! :)
