iPad :D

Hey,

Well you've probs all heard the stuff about the iPad...

Seriously though, if finale made an iPad version, I'd probs go buy one on release day haha

Anyone tried any of the other composing apps in the App Store?

I've tried some beat creators. Nothing really struck my fancy or was all that intuitive. But, there are a lot on the market, so they can't all be bad.

Why not spend the exact same amount of money on a better, more traditionally functional tablet? App store pah.

Though does anyone have links to tech specs? Apple's site has no processor speed, etc...

http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/

Processor speed is 1 GHz.

Apple's changed their site, 'parrently. My B.

But only serves to further my understanding that this is an overpriced toy rather than a real computer. Can anyone say Macbook Air?

LOL :D Perfect Timing haha

To be honest, I don't think the iPad is really that overpriced. What can you really buy for $800, either Laptop, Netbook or Desktop (with screen)? Not a great deal really.

Although I do think it is a bit crippled.

I think it should have a usb port so that when you want to make and edit documents (as Apple has made a iPad version of iWork) you can easily move it to a computer if you need to without having to plug the whole tablet in.

But I really like the idea of a touch screen for composing anyway. I have this ultimate vision in my mind of being able to grab a stylus and write the music on the screen and it gets converted into the electronic version which you can then playback. No more clicking and typing.

But I don't think any of the iPad generations will be able to facilitate that.

There are a few Windows 7 "slate" or tablet device due out at the end of this year, which will be interesting to see as well.

Although, after having the equivalent Windows-Mobile type iPhone, and then buying an iPhone, I've realised that, for me at least, i'd rather a product is a bit limited in what it can do, but does those things to perfection. The flip side is you have a product which has the potential to do looots of things, but can't really do any of them all that well.

That's the Mac idea I think... Simplicity through limited function. lol

I'd LOVE to see the HP slate when it comes out and find that it kicks the iPad's donkey, is easy and user friendly, but also elegant and with more functionality.

I'm not brand-biased. I just want the product that works best! :D

Check out eeePC. Bigger processor, better ram, uglier screen, and a more traditional setup. It ain't as pretty, but runs Win 7 and likely OSX and -nix and actually functions like a computer. It's similarly priced, and provides what Mac should have created -- a true netbook.

Relevant and interesting article. Optimistic, considering most of these things aren't currently possible, but a cool brainstorm nonetheless:

MIDIPad – The iPad with its advanced multitouch input system could easily serve as a control surface or MIDI controller, creating unique ways to “play” sampled instruments and control both MIDI events and software such as digital audio workstations.

the key world here is could ...

Nice article, Marius. My dad wanted to use the iPad as a mixer provided they come out with an app for that and have some bluetooth connection to Logic. I think all of those are solid ideas and most of them are feasible. Nothing really struck me as, "OMG, that's crazy talk! The iPad can't do that."

I was most excited about SketchPad, ScorePad, SpotPad, and Practice Pad. For the last Pad I mentioned, there's already a computer program called Smart Music that does it for you, but it's not very portable, intuitive, or easy to set-up. If you just had a single device be your score, metronome, and instructor, you could get some solid practice done.

Peace on Earth,

-John

I'm just going to wait for the Courier.

hello

this ipad costs to much for me

Seeing that the iPhone can already do these things (just with a too small screen to be comfortable), I don't see how it's a big "could". I'm certain using the iPad as a midi controller will be easily possible.

The only thing I'm worried about a bit in this respect is that (if it works like the iPhone) the connection will only work via WiFi, which is always a slightly riskier solution than good old cables in a setting where you can't afford losing the connection (i.e. a live performance).
