Falling Leaves

Featured Replies

A theme I wrote some time ago. I got inspired when playing "The Legend Of Zelda: The Minish Cap" when walking through a forest.

Falling Leaves

Your phrase structure is nice, which helps make the piece more memorable for me. Good work on that.

I'd recommend giving more attention to your texture. The accompaniment pretty much stays the same through the entire piece for the most part. Think about some other ways to work the melody and accompaniment out so there's more variety.

Welcome to the forum, by the way. Glad you're here and thanks for letting us listen to your work. Be sure to comment on other members' works in the forum and I look forward to your next work.

Thanks for the comment!

You're right, accompaniment is not my forte ^^"

But hey, this was only my second composition, enough room for improvement!

wow only your second comp?

you people are crazy  it took me forever to learn to compose on this level...

i agree with anti A...the piece is very memorable, but I would add a little more to the accompaniment...

Not much to add to what's been said except that it's nice to see that someone else actually played The Minnish Cap. I really liked that game. It wasn't a classic, certainly no series landmark, but it WAS fun and cute.

Anyhow, nice piece and definitely familiar. Keep working on your writing and you'll get to writing more complex and sophisticatedly developed pieces. :)

Welcome to YC.

For being only a second stab at composing this is pretty good. I do like the rhythms you chose for the piece.

Nicely done

Ron

Sounds nice, for your second composition.

I think if you'd do the instrumentation properly, this would be fitting very well for a game like Zelda.

If I were you, I would actually completely getting rid of the piano there. Try using pizzicato strings, and maybe some more interesting percussion (like glockenspiel, marimba, or anything like that). That would keep the structure of the piece but would make it more interesting to listen to.

Somewhere about the middle of the pice you start a rather straight rythm for a while. I would ad some sustained notes (maybe played by horn), or you use some long bass in addition.

Try a little experimenting, it's fun and'll get you further quickly.

Very nice start!

very pretty song, it would be nice to hear a little more varied orchestration or maybe a softer flute with garriton sound.. what software do you use? if you want a nicer midi, i'd suggest using honky-tonk piano. it might give it a more flightly feel blending better with a flute possibly.

Thanks for the tips! I'm used to composing for piano only, which is what I started out with for this piece, I just changed the lead to flute. But I'll try some of the things you suggested

I use MuseScore, which is actually more of a notation program rather than a sound editor, but it works :P

Thanks for the comments, guys!

EDIT:

I had a little go at it, I added the new version (see first post).

Wow, you did pretty much everything i mentioned :-)

Sounds defenetely more interesting doesn't it?

The midi pizz strings sound awful, though, I didn't have that in mind ;-)

Maybe you could switch the instrumentation of marimba and pizz strings (so that the stings play the part that now the marimba plays and the other way round)

But that's just another idea, you don't have to do all these things of course^^

It's indeed a lot better, thanks for the tips ^^

It's actually a harp, my program doesn't have certain instruments, including pizzicato strings, for some reason...

I was thinking that too at first, I'll try switching it :)

Sounds really cool now :)

I'm hoping to hear more compositions of you soon!

HOORAY, SOMEONE ELSE USES MUSESCORE!!! ;)

For a second composition, it's fairly good. Fairly simple, but then again, surprisingly effective.

To further develop this composition standard, you need to get in the habit of banging together instruments and notes and chords for the *epic feel* It won't be pretty at first, but it pays off as you get used to orchestral composition. To be honest, I found this the hardest stage (in fact, I've only just gotten past it) so don't worry, and persevere :)

Another thing - you should look around for some better GM (general MIDI) soundbanks to use in Musescore. Also, if you're looking for a good, free workstation, LMMS is your friend.

Haha, it was about the only free program that works on Mac that I could find at first. :P

Well, the composition was supposed to be just simple. I'll get to epic ones when I'm a bit more expirienced.

A problem I have with MuseScore, is that when I use sound libraries to play in the program itself, it usually crashes... So, now I'm kinda stuck with only piano sound. I only hear the full product when I export. I'm guessing it's my computer's fault, though.

Thanks for the tips and comments! :)
