It's interesting: he criticized me not too long ago for my compositions not being "serious" enough... and I wonder if you have a similar opinion... lolz.

Serious compositions can be fun, and fun pieces can be serious.

My opinions on the seriousness of compositions rest on 3 factors:

1. Is the composer writing or just putting notes on paper? And do these notes convince the audience that they made the right choice to come and hear?

2. The composer should make sure his files look neat and tidy before presenting them to anyone. I tend to not give untidy scores a second thought.

3. Is the composer keeping in mind the practicality of what is being put on paper? Or is he limited to what the computer plays to him?

What does he mean by "not serious?"

He believes that I don't take "THE ART" seriously because I INSIST on writing my emotions in note form on paper.... I do not adhere to the strict rules of 18th century Theory and he does... he has an uppity attitude and believes that I am not fit to be a composer because I write modern music.

Therefore, he believes my pieces are not serious since apparently I am not serious. But, I feel you might have a different opinion. What reminded me of him when you made your introduction was that he spoke about how the musical society was going downward... and I just feel as though he might think my music was contributing to that downfall; not that I care. haha.

I write my emotions in note form on paper, too, but I have a natural sense of sophistication. I find it helps to be discreet about such things so that the audience is not put off by any overly sentimental explanation for a piece. Hopefully that will help them better identify with it.

One must ask for what purpose music emerged into the world anyway. Why did the Greeks tell stories of Orpheus? Because they believed that music had the power to melt the hearts of trees and rocks.

I am really quite mischievous when it comes down to things. Like the great masters, I am a real person. I just love turning people in unexpected directions.

Welcome Chintal!

You know, no matter if Chintal is composer or not, a member with knowledge about singing may be very useful here, sometimes we need the opinion of a singer, ... we have members with quite good knowledge about orchestrations, instrumentation, counterpoint etc ... but, how to write for voices ... mmm not very much ... (well I know Morivou writes for Choir and others too.... )

I just wanted to know... I wasn't attacking or anything. Curiosity kills me.

Hello Chintal. Welcome to :yc: where Musicians share ideas.

Hi, I'm Clyde. I'm a Musician, Composer, Theorist, and Philosopher. I've been playing Guitar since I was 3, Drums since I was 5, and Piano and Harmonica since I was 7. I only play my own original music. I grew up with Jazz, and West African Music, and I've always had a deep love for this music. Jazz, and music from senegal and Mali in particular have really influenced my style. however, my curiosity and open mindedness towards music eventually led me to discover my love for free jazz and twentieth century classical music. Avant Garde music such as this has now become the music that I love the most. However, I dislike and disagree with most of the theories used by Avant Garde atonal composers, so I have come up with my own. And the music that I now play is almost entirely my own. I call it New Gospel. I figured that joining this forum would be a good oppurtunity for me to share this music with others.

Interesting combo, Clyde. Welcome to YC, where musicians share ideas!
